Geeze Chris, twice now. You must feel like you have a target on your back. Glad that you're okay, situational awareness as I've said before will give you the upper hand. You did some quick thinking there.

I don't know what make/model of vehicle you drive, but you might want to think about getting a "beater" so you don't attract attention to yourself. Get a stun gun or a can of mace - you really don't want to deal with the emotional impacts of shooting someone.

I posted this once in another South Africa crime thread. I attended an Emergency Medicine conference and one lecture was given by an ER doc at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto. I sat at a table with docs working in trauma centers in Los Angeles and New York City. By the end of his talk, we were stunned. The violence and trauma the South African doc saw in a single day made us feel like we worked in a day care center clinic. It's an incredibly dangerous place.

5cc of Succs with a 21g needle should take care of things for you nicely.
One of the female anesthesiologists I used to work with kept one in her little running fanny pack. Attempted rape would likely be a fatal error in judgement.

Thinking back, level of calmness was good.My wife also stayed very calm.I guess this is the best to handle such an incident.Don't freeze, don't panic. The robbers hope for you to do just that, because that gives them enough time....

I was driving the "beater" on both occasions.Perhaps they see the smallish car as a easy target ? or perhaps they will take anyone, anytime if they get the chance.

The problem is that your hands are occupied. You dont have time.If you get away (like we did) and you return (when I did the u-turn) and then do something, its not self defense anymore....The law will have a problem.Weird isn't it ?? |

Living in one of the Safest countries in the world (where babies are left in their strollers outside café's for example, I have never been the victim of a crime of any sort) I have a hard time relating to this, although I know of the problem in SA.
A friend of mine used to live there until he was 12. The family moved to Finland due to the escalating crimes. His mother is a Finn, and his father is South African. South Africa is a country I'd like to visit, but the crime rate is keeping me away, sadly. Chris, welcome to the EU.

The emotional impact will be nothing compared to the murder charges against you.I saw no weapons,BUT when I did the u-turn I saw the grabber had something wrapped in a plastic bag.Not sure what it was.Perhaps something to smash the window,if it wasn't slightly open or a knife, gun ? I don't know.

Easy, if you can't move now you do whatever you need to do to protect yourself and your family. Not hard

My daughter lived in downtown Turku for two years. She and her husband were amazed by the lack of crime. The absence of guns, the incredibly tough driving-under-the influence laws and safety walking around town day or night were such a huge change from the US.

I wonder how many potential victims actually have the presence of mind to fight back, as you did by holding his hand and driving away. Hopefully he's nursing a sore arm/shoulder and will be less likely to be the decoy in the future.
I still say a jab to the hand with something sharp would have been just the ticket. Maybe keep something handy in the dash for the future. Sorry you live with these constant threats.

Sounds terrible but I can't really understand why you would have made a u turn to go back for him? He didn't get your jewelry; you pulled a stunt driver move to get away....why go back?

Glad you won that one Chris.
It sucks to have to contemplate relocating because of the vermin.
