Is the End Near? Autobahn's last summer of speed?

The unlimited-speed on the German autobahn may be close to the extinct species list.

According to the German publication Bild, if the opposition Social Democratic Party wins in this September's German elections, party leader Sigmar Gabriel promises to form a coalition with the Green Party -- and both say they'll limit autobahn speeds to 120 kmh (about 75 mph),

I saw this in AutoWeek: http://www.autoweek.com/article/2013...#ixzz2Soc6WvdL

Say it ain't so, Joe...

PS: I take no sides on the political angle here - just sharing in the spirit of communication since TRF'ers might want to get in gear if they want a final unlimited speed fix.

I will be there end of August to drive on the Autobahn. After that, they can do what they want but it doesnt surprise me someone in government wants to control yet ANOTHER thing in peoples lives.

Never happen. That being said, the full-bore "unlimited" sections of autobahn are constantly shrinking. Even on the unlimited sections, I typically don't see people doing more than ~150-160Kmph. Any faster and you're in a constant battle with slower traffic and it's very tiring because you have to stay so alert versus just enjoying the drive.

I did 145mph in my Audi S4 on the A6, just West of the Czech border - not much traffic at all, but I was getting about 15mpg at that speed. :)

Pretty much all the rest of Europe has a 130kmph speed limit.

Worst ever experience we had in politics . . . ask the Germans . . . they know it for sure !

Planes makes noise, pollutes but not when they use it to go on holidays . . .

That will be no problems, no one drives in 120 km/h (not even the Police) where it says so.

I remember when I was in like 8th grade or somthing I was comming back from haufbrauhaus in munich with my dad and buddy, we were going like 240kmh in a bmw 3 series. then got passed like we were standing still in some sports car i've never seen, one of the most impressive looking cars i've seen.

When I was younger and had a 911 I had to try it out and drove to Germany . . . top speed was 285 km/h . . and that is really fast enough . . .

Today I no hair on my head would even think to do it again . . . or is there one . . .

But there where BMW M5's passing me . . .

120 would surprise me....France is 130 (has been for some time) and I haven't heard of any changes even with the socialists and greens in power (since a year, at all levels of government).

Anyway, I like fast cars, but the passing of the unlimited sections wouldn't upset me. Seems like a relic from a long time ago, when cars weren't nearly as powerful as they are now.

That's the most depressing combination of words I've read today.

The "green people" are trying to force us in the US to use E-15 fuel, which the automakers say will ruin our engines and they won't warrant cars that use the fuel.

The same doom and gloom was said when we switched from leaded gas and went to catalytic converters . If we don't get smarter about this the next "big" luxury option will be onboard Air purification systems .

Hey Matt,
I did see pics that proved it.

Still happily wearing our chrono!
Hope all is well!

I maxed out a diesel B class around 175kmh, and while I am not a regular at those speeds the problem is not going fast, it is the trucks doing 99 and pull out to overtake another truck doing 98.5. I am surprised there are not more accidents in Europe due to this, that said i did chuckle when passed by a Maser Gransport pulling north of 250kmh. If you really want to go fast you can always go to track and flog your car to death.
