Midge or other biting insect prevention
Hubby and I are headed on vacation to Iceland in early July. We have been warned by several people about "midge swarms" as we are out trooping about the countryside. We've been advised to bring the heavy duty bug spray. I know from experience that the TSA will confiscate any aresol sprays. I've been looking at the OFF clip on repellents. Does anyone know 1) do they work and 2) can I pack them in the luggage and get them thru the TSA and customs

You can buy Off in a pump spray. Just check it in your luggage. If you are carry-on only, then you can look for travel size or buy a small spray bottle and transfer it to that.
I have never used the clip-on version, but have considered it. The spray sure works good though.

Why not bring the non-aresol kind? We use "Off" with the pump sprayer and it works just fine. Either that, or buy the repellant when you get there and leave it when you head home.

Back woods off is very good, a higher concentration of Deet.
Put it in checked luggage.

There's a product called "cactus juice" that I tried last year down the Jersey shore. It is the only thing that would repel green head flys. It seemed to keep everything else away too. Smells good too.

The clip-ons work if you're fairly still and the wind is near zero. Otherwise your upwind side is not going to be protected - here's is just one example of a review...
Perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised. Susan M. Paskewitz, a professor of entomology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who specializes in mosquito control, had already warned me that dense swarms of mosquitoes tend to overwhelm devices that spread repellent in the air, including backyard foggers and candles. She says she always uses spray-on repellent when visiting the Boundary Waters region in Minnesota, another place where mosquitoes are in charge.http://articles.latimes.com/2009/jul...h/he-skeptic27

Thanks all! Living in the city, we haven't had need of bug repellents for a few years. Went to the store today and picked up OFF in the pump dispensers.
