But what i was curious about was do you think there is a similar disparity in after sales valuation

My only point is that the extra money is for 2 additional complications 372v422 and 5711v5712. Basically I really like the 5712 and am ticked it is so much more!
Same as the OP that the 422 is so much more that the 372.

I like the 422, and knowing I would buy the best for myself always makes me smile. If I don't start with the best, it costs me the next time. Small details like the second hand make a difference to me personally.

I am quite sure I got a better deal on the 423 than I would have on the 372 given that the latter is *probably* the more sought after piece among the 372-422-423.

That being said. considering the price point of these pieces, I'd rather have spent a little more getting the piece I want than have saved a few hundred on a piece that wasn't my first choice. For me, the 423 WAS my first choice and I have no regrets on the price or the watch. My only concern was the 47mm size but that is something I really like now that I have one!!

I want to know why a 372 should cost 10.5 K

Panerai was good value for the money ... but that is quite some time ago

10,500 for a 2 hands watch with 0.0 complications is freaking stupid
The finishing is not good, I mean it's not high end like PA, VC, PP, ...

10,500 ??? not even a bracelet but 50 usd strap

Look at Zenith and IWC what they give you for that price

The build quality and attention to detail on my 372 is excellent. I paid $7800 for my 372 and while that's nothing to scoff at, I feel it's worth it on my wrist.

10.5K? Well I wouldn't pay boutique prices anyway, so effectively it's a $7800 watch to me.

I've owned AP and of course Panerai doesn't come close to the fine-ness of AP. But Pams are on par with Rolex, Omega, and IWC. The price is right in line with the watch class.

There is no disputing these points

However, they for now do seem to be getting their price...

The Panerai are a unique watch in many ways and it is hard to quantify, imho they have no competition from any other brand in the way of similar niche.

The dials are timelessly simple, legible

The case size has had a direct hand in revolutionizing the industry toward the acceptance of bigger & bigger watches.

The branding is rock solid as far as identifying, given it is not the most well known brand, certainly among the easiest to identify (& tell the time) from across the room!

Not to mention the patented crown protection, undeniably manly screw in strap bars & the assortment of massive rich leather interchangeable straps!

So i guess it comes down to, how do you position/price your product, when you have zero competition

I think the zenith type 20 has a very unique look too.

Do you want to know how much i paid for mine in 2001? CHF 4250/-- full retail at Bucherer ... There was even a waitlist 2 years plus at that time.

I paid $4,200 in 2004. SRP was $4,700 and I got $500 off. I'm sure I could get more than that now, it's been serviced in 2009 and NOT polished because it didn't need it. I don't even wear the bracelet, keeping it on an Everest in light rotation. But it's a keeper.

It's nice to know that something, especially a luxury good, has increased in value.

Back to the Panerai, I don't expect the 423 to increase in value, but I really don't care.

I'm not sure but maybe it is in the manufacturing cost?

first, the addition of the pr indicator and seconds hand means they also have to drill more holes, put more lume for the dial and position the hands which takes more time.

Secondly, sapphire crystal is harder to work with hence the cost is passed on to us. What do you guys think?

Trying to rationalize the expense of any luxury watch is an exercise in stupidity. If you like the watch, buy it; if not, why do you care who does?

When Panerai set to produce 2500 pcs of O series 372, do they really produce that much? Any chance they only manage to produce 1000 pcs and stop there and go on to next year they start all over with P series ? ... Thanks for your kind feedback. Cheers! .. Jennifer

Over the years I have seen changes in their production.

Sometimes, they have shown pieces at Basel/SIHH (early spring) and not produced them until the next spring. I have a sense that they produce x out of 2500 and if they sell then they produce more or even the rest.

As they ramp up more and more Boutiques to sell their inventory instead of more Authorized Dealers you can see an increase in the sale of these pieces as people buy them to stay on the "good side" of their Boutique which allows them a shot at some "Really Limited Editions."

Just my 2 cents.
