Y/G DD versus W/G Daytona, Black face

Can you please help!
I have been trying to make up my mind out of the two above watches, which would be the best one to get.
I know that they both come from different stables,so to speak i.e the DD is a dress watch and the Daytona is a sports watch.
But I have had a Y/G Rolex before but never a W/G, is one type of gold more harder wearing then the other?
And which watch would hold its value the best?
I would be grateful if any of the forum could please help me in this matter, please feel free to include any pictures or additional info that would help me decide.

It is a matter of personal taste and preference what to go for, Tony!

Personally, of the two suggested, I would go for THIS one:

I love the silver dial!

But I suggest you try them both on at an AD and go for the one that appeals most to you.

With either, you get a winner!

Best of luck!

In a way, that DD is the "king Rolex" to me. I have wanted one since my interest for Rolex began, about 25 years ago. Problem is that it is way beyond my budget, so I have bought other models - in steel - over the time. But had I NOT bought all those steel models, I could have bought a couple of the DD's for the money I've spent on other Rolex models!

Bo I hear what you are saying,I have followed a similar path. I am sure that if I could get allthe money that I have spent on watches, over the years. I would be half way there to owing a GMT Master 2 "ICE"!!!!

Personally, I wouldn't!

NO, after seeing the photos,my wife thinks that my DD is "Bling" so I would have nochance with that one.
Also you can't live in it and that would be th eonly way that I could buy one, besides the divorce settlement would be horrendous!!!!
However saying all of that, I know an AD that is waiting for one tocome in over the next week or so and he says that if I go in he will get out so that I can get a good luck at it,maybe even put it on!!

My .

WG looks like SS.

The YG Daytona is my grail watch.

If you can get one, by all means do!

That YG Daytona is one gorgeous watch. It's got my vote as well.

The DD is the most noticable Rolex, indeed. The "King of Rolex". But the Daytona is really cool, just because it goes with dressy or casual wear. But to be a Rolex collector, the DD is a must have.

Let's see. In terms of comparing the movements, both are equally reliable. In terms of the WG vs YG issue, I would consider:
1. YG is more "showy" or noticeable. You might actually like this or you might not want to attract notice, so this is your call.
2. WG finishes are "painted" or "coated" over YG. So if you have the watch for a few years, the YG will tend to wear through after a time. I have heard that Rolexes WG has a harder more resilent finish than other brands, but I am not specifically aware of what that process would be.
3. Do you need a chronograph function? Would you use it alot?
4. Do you need the Day/Date function more?
5. Prestige-wise, I would think the Day-Date would be more prestigious.
6. Do you wear the watch at work? Do you work in a suit? You might in such a case look better with a dress watch. If you work in sports and dress causally, obviously, a sport watch would be better.
7. Both have 100m water resistance, so that is the same.

It all depends on what works best for you.

Hi Topcat

This is a toughy.

IMO if you have a big wrist then go for the 40mm. My DD looks small on my wrist (at just under 7.5"). The 40mm Rolex looks better in proportion. WG does look very much like SS - you can tell the difference easily when you wear it but not to look at.
I'll take a pix with my DD and Daytona SS white face. - hang on a sec.
This will give you an idea of the size of these Rolex on my wrist - hope this helps you make your mind up.

I prefer the white face and would go for a meteorite dial on an SS Daytona if possible.

.
Rolex WG is not painted/ coated whatever in any form!!!!!!!!!! . A solid palladium alloy mix to give it its "white appearance" wear would be consistant with any other solid YG WG Rose Gold watch in the rolex range all having similar ratings on the "Mohs Scale" of metal/alloy hardness

Only copper and gold have 'colour'. What is the composition of the WG that Rolex uses to make it 18K white gold.

Haakon, thank you for your valuable input. A lot of the questions that you have written are good probing ones and ones that need answering honestly. My grail watch has always been the DD but now having one and after seeing a picture of a black face W/G Daytona I am not so sure. I think that I will have to wait until I get the phone call from my AD to say that he has got one for me to look at. I would certainly have my wifes approval as she prefers it over the DD.
Cheers

Eddie ,thank you for taking the time to send a photo of both your great watches.
Do both of them get the same wear time, or do you use one for casual and the other for work etc?
My wife says that we should come down to Australia to have a look at them!!!!
I think that its just her excuse to visit your lovely country again, as she loves it.
Cheers

Tony,

I have only had the Daytona for a week. The DD is an 'N' from about 1991. I don't wear the DD very often but I can see me wearing the Daytona a LOT.

It would be great to see you down under, you could convince some of my English friends to go back home instead of complaining all the time.

You and your wife, of course, are welcome any time.

White gold is not painted or coated over. It acheived by using different alloys mixed with the gold. Yellow and rose gold are primarily mixed with copper with platinum being added for the rose gold. White gold is acheived with nickel or palladium being added. (see link) http://www.gold.org/jewellery/techno...urs/white.html

White gold Daytona would be my choice, but that is all it is, personal choice, try flipping it on its head, if you owned both and had to sell one, which would it be?

I should just add here, in the discussion of WG, that it shows scratches. If you're an active guy, you should go for the YG.

Thats the question that I am trying to answer.
I already have a DD if I flip it, will I, as I have in the past regret moving it on!!!
I wish that I could afford both,then there wouldn't be a problem.
