I quit my job today...

Greetings TRF,

I feel like sharing this with you tonight, after working for a company for 4 years and 2 months I quit my student job today. I can't say I feel bad for it since the reason why I'm leaving is because I've been offered another job elsewhere, my manager knew I wasn't planning on staying in my store forever and she knew that time was coming so it's not like I was leaving in bad terms with her, I even took the initiative of telling her about my new job a month prior to my last day instead of the usual two weeks since she was always so kind with my and I really enjoyed working with/for her.

I feel like I'm turning quite a page in my life, I've had quite a lot of co-workers in my store and even helped other stores every now and then by working a few days at other places so I've got to know a lot of people. When you've been working with the same people every single weekend and during all your holidays/vacation for that amount of years you sure develop some friendships, some of you may have worked with your co-workers for much longer but as a clerk job in a small store I feel like the ambiance is different, you don't expect people to be with you that long even if they work full time. The only bad thing about leaving is not working with them again or seeing my regular customers, people with whom I've developped a long term professional relationship over the years. Long story short, I worked with animal owners and had to be some kind of a counselor for accessories, food or treats, it may sound stupid but some of those customers came very often and I've seen quite a few dogs growing over the years, some were even brought in when they were adopted at around three months and came by almost every week until they reached adulthood.

All in all, I can't say I'm sad to leave even though there is this bad side. I just have a strange feeling right now as it's the job I've had for the longest time and I'm leaving it for something much more serious. I just thought I'd share it since some of you know what I'm studying and I wanted to give you a little update regarding my professional situation.

Thank you for reading, feel free to comment.

Congrats on your move. As billy Joel song says, life is a series of hellos and goodbyes so if it's time to go there you go. As for the details, I'm afraid it's a bit vague so I can't really comment on that. Good luck.

Congratulations on the new job! It's natural to feel a bit sad I'm sure after all the good relationships and friendships you've built but in the end you have to do what's right for you. Good luck!!

Passages, Carl, as you're moving through your life. It's bittersweet, isn't it? I still miss the people I used to work with at my various jobs. I miss being in school, too. You'll have these memories always.

Is your new job related to watchmaking or jewelry?

I understand how you are feeling. Last week I said goodbye to some great people I have worked with for the last 3.5 years. Even though it's tough, change is a good thing when you are working toward your life goals!

It is indeed sometimes very difficult to move on from something that has been such an integral, positive part of your life.

You have gained life experience and you are leaving on good terms.

Unless you realistically see yourself there forever, you cannot ask for anymore than that.

You also never know when your path may cross those that you think you may never see again.

As they say, one door closes and another one opens.

Congratulations on your new job.

Onwards and upwards Carl!

Onwards and Upwards my friend. I've quit about 30 jobs over the years, and never had any regrets. Just have confidence and imagination, and you'll always be fine.

Congratulations on your new job. Its always tough to move on when you have built a good working relationship with your colleagues and customers at the stores.

A new job is awaiting you, and many of us here believe you will walk that path smoothly.

Once in a while in your free time you can visit your previous workplace to say 'hi' to everyone!

A rolling stone gathers no moss.

Again, congrats on the new job!

Your thoughts about your old boss and the relationships you made with co-workers and customers says a lot about you. I wish you well in your new job and it seems quite evident your new employer is lucky to have you.

Thank you all for your kind and thoughtful comments, it is much appreciated.

I'm actually very excited to start my new job, it's the place where I did my internship and I've been told by both my boss and my co-worker that my work and personality are appreciated. My old colleagues all wished me well and that's what's nice, I'm leaving with good souvenirs from the place and I'll know where to go whenever I need to buy dog or cat accessories...

It's just special to know that after so many years of studying and going to school I'm finally getting there, I've been sitting and listening to teachers for quite a few years and until recently I can't say I had a very clear idea of what I wanted to do in life. Now that I'm into watchmaking things go much faster, I'm going back to school on Tuesday to finish my last 5 - 6 months of formation and then I'll start working full time to gain experience and earn a real living instead of just getting money to "survive" while I'm at school...

A big change is coming and the fact that it is that close is very exciting and sure makes me happy...a bit stressed perhaps (I guess it's just normal) but I'm definitely looking forward to it and am ready to accept the challenge.

Best of luck with the transition Carl. They say that changing jobs is the fourth most stressful activity on the planet, as follows:

1. Divorce
2. Moving house
3. Sending in a Patek Grand Complication for a service
4. Changing jobs.

Onward and upward Carl!

I did find when I have quit jobs in the past (even ones I didn't care for so much), it's not easy. However, every time, it turned out to be a good thing to advance my career.

Ultimately I ended up started two of my own businesses, so all was well that ended well.

Congrats on the new job and don't look back...

You've left a "job" and started a career.
Good luck. This is what it's all about. In a few years you'll move on again and this will be referred to as your first job - first in your field. Build your network. Stay in touch with people from the past. It's only going to get bigger and better.
