Value of my D-Series SD in 5 yrs
ok folks,
I paid $4500 CASH for a brand new with stickers and the whole shabang from an AD, a D Series SD. I am wondering how much it will be worth in 5 yrs if kept in immaculate condition? I don't mind taking a $200-$300 hit on it if I have to sell it but again, if I hold on to it for the next 3-5yr period, could I get about $4300 for it? I am not hurting for money so I have no problem locking it up in a safe and forgetting about it .... thnx |

if the SD will be upgraded with a ceramic bezel in basel this year
then hold on to it because IMO it will bring more than 4500$.. but at the moment i dont think it would bring more than 3800 and likely less.. wait and see what happens in basel |

At 7-8 years, assuming it is in excellent condition, I would imagine it will be worth a few hundred more than you paid. I think someone tracked it and found that 6 years was about how long it took to appreciate to the retail price paid.

I don't think a new version of the SD sporting a ceramic bezel would make the old version of the SD worth more anytime soon. There are simply too many SD's out there. I'd just wear your SD if I were you and enjoy it. If it rises considerably in price, it's a bonus, if not, well then you still have a cool watch that you have at least enjoyed instead of having it stucked away in a safe. Some say the SD is build like a safe, so it does not need another safe to be in. It's meant to be worn!

But
If you have a DRSD then... wear it in rotation with the D. |

It sounds like you are trying to pretend this is an "investment". A Rolex is not an investment. An investment is something that is supposed to appreciate. Think about it....when you buy a watch you are already underwater. If you stash it in the safe, you don't get the benefit or enjoyment of wearing it and you've not only lost money but also the "opportunity cost" of that money. This means that even if you put your money in a savings account you would come out ahead. It just doesn't make any sense. Even if five years from now you could sell it for what you paid for it, you still are way behind. Just not the way to go.

And if you put it in a safe, the oils would congeal and then you will have another 600 to service it to boot. I think that owning a beautiful watch is an opportunity for real good faith existential enjoyment in the present. Why on earth save such a thing for a time that may not exist for you. Your moments here are short. Get that thing on your wrist, wear it, forget about scratches and perfection, live with the watch. If you get bored with it, get another. It can be polished nicely at service, and if you take good care if it, you can still get a good bang for it.
If you want something to put in a safe, try stock or bond certificates, trust deeds, security interests, and gold bouillon. |

You may get a close amount of money when you resell in a few years, but who knows how far your dollar will go in those times.

I think it's pretty neat that Rolex hold their value over time.

its relatively quite safe to assume the value of yr rolex wl hold steady aft 5 yrs or more.... getting back a little than wat u paid for wld be a better gauge..... as an investment expecting higher returns... well why put yrself thru all that... just put it on.. and enjoy how it feels on the wrist.... without the unnecessary anxiety....
most of all, wear it in good health..... |

Forgot to answer your actual question, but most likely you'll be losing quite a bit of money in 5 years if you resell. I see no reason for the price to go anywhere but down (unless you count inflation).

If it is an investment you are after then put the money in the bank. Who cares what it is worth in a few years time, wear it and enjoy it.
