I say once you get over the first scratch, the subsequent ones are not nearly as painful

Yeah I agree?! He's posted an example of what's watch looks like but I do things is at the opposite end of the scale. I would say the damage to that bezel is a bit much, even for some of the less bothered forum members.

I get where you're coming from, but you're on a watch forum. What, on this entire site, do you see having any relevance to any third world country?

That's not damage, it's glare.

Scratches show character. A watch with no scratches is a new watch that is never worn. Each scratch shows that the watch is appreciated and used.

I have a bunch of watches that get worn all the time and don't have scratches.

Apparently I don't flail my arms around and work on a sandpaper top desk like some of you guys.

Try not to scratch mine but of course they get scratched anyway. To deal with it I rotate them out.

Just enjoy wearing it, and don't abuse it. I think of my watch just like my car. It is to be used and not abused. Scratches will happen, but when mechanical failures occur, that's the time when you MUST send the watch or car for service.

Best bet is to to buy second hand it will have scratches then, so you don't feel like it is your fault and you probably wont notice the ones you put on.. I don't worry about it on my watches, but I spend my lifetime trying to avoid them on my cars.

There's no such thing as scratches, only patina. It's what makes your watch your own and not the same the guy on the train next to you.

Buy only pre-owned swathes that come pre-scratched.

I used to get upset with a few scratches here and there, but I have grown to appreciate the stories behind each one.

Wrinkles, scars, watch scratches; inevitable.

It is a watch, it keeps track of the time for me.

Scratches on a watch are like wrinkles on a person, they do not bother me, they add character.

Over time the watch will develop a nice patina as the scratches blend together. The watch will look worse before it looks better. Just wear & enjoy your watch, don't sweat the small stuff!

Routine scratches are inevitable and build up after a while. If necessary they can be lightly brushed away. They make your watch sort of unique though and most Rolexes were made to rake them. Enjoy your watch!

Normal scratches and swirls are just fine by me. I have to admit though, a significant gouge out of a case or deep dent is something I prefer to avoid. For example, whats left of the SD above, that would bother me hahaha. Use but not abuse.

After the first it's no big deal....if you don't want to scratch them leave them in the box.

It's a watch, character happens, not the end of the world. Get it polished when you get it serviced.

Enjoy

I do my best to never touch the highly polished areas (when I pick it up or put it on/take it off I hold it by the bracelet or clasp).

I also am extremely careful when laying it down at night.

Also, common sense stuff e.g. not wearing it in any overly-hazardous situations (such as a trip to the home improvement store, working outside, etc.). My issue lately is that I have a 20 month old daughter who wants daddy as soon as I walk in at night, and I have no where to take it off before she wants "up". It's hard to tell a toddler 'sorry, daddy needs to take his Rolex off before he can pick you up'.

It's also really tough since she LOVES my watch, and wants to handle and touch it all the time.
