Graduation Present....

I actually thought of this one last night, but was too tired to log back on again.....

My son is 10 now and already loves looking at my waches......and I was toying with the idea of getting a 14060 or something like that now, paying it off, locking it up and giving it to him as a graduation present later on in life.

Has anyone else done or heard of this before? Sound like a good idea?

Here's my view on that..

If you buy one now, and lock it up....when you present it, it will be a decade old watch that may not mean anything to your son..

On the other hand, if you get yourself a nice Sub, and you wear it most of the time so that this is the watch your son identifies you with....then upon graduation it means so much more.

Of course, you will have sent it to the RSC for a complete reconditioning and service before presentation...

I love the idea of getting him a watch as a present, but I'm not sure that I like the idea of buying something now to give to him 8 years from now. I have a baby, and my plan is to give him the DJ that my grandfather bought for my dad, which he then in turn, gave to me.

Maybe you should get the watch for yourself, wear it and enjoy it, and then pass it or one of your other watches down to him. Obviously, you could also choose to get him a new watch at that point in time. I just don't think it makes a lot of sense to buy a watch and lock it up for 8 years (you'll need one servicing in the meanwhile).

There's also the off chance that he may not even want a Rolex (heaven forbid!)

If he likes them that much, why not get him an older mid sized or even ladies DJ for ~$2K that he can wear now, and upgrade him as rewards for achievements, good grades, etc? Just a thought...

I wouldn't buy him a new watch now to give him in 8 years, unless you are going to wear it until then.

My kids are eargerly waiting to inherit one of my watches; because it means I will be dead and they will be rid of me. I have to agree with Tools on this one. Buy it now, wear it, and present it to him at the appropriate time. Nice all around gesture on your part.

That's why I'm saying to get a used, inexpensive one. And probably not let him wear it daily, but get him a winder and he can wear it on special occasions.

That's a tough one, I think if I put myself as your kid in 8 - 10 years time. I'd much prefer to be given a watch that you had worn.. lot's more history and sentimental value

However, even if the Sub lies idle in the safe for years, it would need service before giving it to your son.

Sounds like an excelent Idea Kurt! Specially if you are not going to wear it! imagine having a 15 year old watch that is in new condition!!!! this is every collectors wish!!!! Wow I have no kids but when I have one I will do just that! thanks for sharing!!!!

Wait one year

Buy and wear for 7 years

Service right before graduation

Give to your child! (He then gets the memories, Dad's Rolex & freshly redone to be good as a new watch but, with the nostalga) AND YOU GET ANOTHER ROLEX IN THE MEAN TIME!!!!

Take the money and put in a savings account. In 8 years you have the money for his watch and some (interest) towards one for you

I think the idea of getting the watch for yourself and giving it to him later is the best. I think that a watch that was used by my Father and then presented to me would have much more value than a new watch.

My son is 1yr old. I bought a SS Daytona with the intentions of giving it to my son one day, but I really didnt like it on my wrist and Larry is right, you want your son to recieve a watch that will make him remember YOU everytime he puts it on. Thats my opinion anyway, and thats why I sold my Daytona.

Kurt, put that money in a bluechip mutual fund account now, and let it roll over for 7 or 8 years til his graduation. By then the money will be enough to buy the latest version of 14060M COSC for him and a handsome 116234 for yourself to enjoy in your rocking chair.

I got my LV as a graduation present from college... it was probably the greatest and memorable day of my life so far: Getting a college diploma and receiving a Rolex from my parents.. I mean how much more special can it get? That day just holds a place in my heart and I'm sure it will for your son too whenever you decide to give it to him.

Buy a Rolex box, put a Timex in it - and tell him he'll get the Rolex when he graduates from college.

I'm not saying I would not have loved to have received a Rolex for graduating from high school - but come on, it's high school. Just being there and paying attention pretty much gets you through.

It's a wonderfully thoughtful gesture, however.

On second thought, you can give him your used Rolex when he graduates from high school, and let him have his choice when graduates from college. That should provide plenty of motivation.
