Hello to all

Hope you all can help in my first submariner purchase. I am coming from a Seamaster PO, which was great, but feel I am ready to get a more classic watch that is a bit less sporty without being a dedicated dress watch.

I have narrowed it down to either a 16610 or one of the newer GMT ceramics. I think these both fit the bill for what I need and i do not like the smaller crown of the old GMT, and the submariner is just such a classic and goes well with all kinds of clothes and occassions.

I have just returned from a meeting with a local guy who has a really nice 16610 from 2003 for sale. He is asking 3750 euros for it with box but no papers other than reciept from when he bought it second hand some years ago.

The price seems fair enough for the general going rate here, but I am not too much into Rolex, so hope you guys can chime in on what a reasonable condition is for that price and if this watch matches those criteria.

I shot some pictures with my phone, and hope you can guide me to more knowledge and inside, and hopefully help me truly indentify if everything looks to be as it should

Watch looks in good condition for 2003 as for price well pay what you are comfortable to pay.The so called papers which in the real world was just a warranty and now long expired the watch is the most important.

I would find out when the watch was last serviced. If this is unknown, you have either haggle the price down or steer clear. Servicing could be 500+ euros depending on the work that needs doing. The watch should have had 2 services by now, one every 5 years.

I don't think it has been kept with the service - but it sounded smooth and rotor was much more silent than my PO was, so hope that was a good sign. Maybe I can ask him if he knows more of the history, but I would think he would have made the effort to mention it if he did, as it would make the watch more attractive.

I really liked it, though, and even though I know this is normally considered a "bad" thing, it was obvious that the watch had seen some polishing at some point, but I find that softened and worn in feel very comfortable and desirable :)

One thing I noticed, however, was that the bezel didn't turn very smoothly and tended to be tighter in some spots than others. Definetely a far fetch from a new ceramic sub, and felt sort of cheap to be honest - is this normal and can it be fixed?

How much is the gmt?

Personally I use the bezel dial a lot for parking meter timing so I go with the sub. And the sub is great for resale .

But I wouldn't buy a rolex without papers. Are you in a rush? Maybe be patient and wait.
