He brought joy to so many people through his movies. It is truly a shame and hopefully he can rest in piece.

He is one of a handful of comedians that I can say I, my mother, and grandparents even great grandparents all loved.

His death seems to have touched a chord with many more than the average celebrity death. I think it's deserved. I haven't watched the movie in probably 20 years and it's one that I haven't seen mentioned but it's one of his that really stands out to me. If you get the chance I would recommend the movie Awakenings which is based on a true story.

I think his genius was the following:

He was a grownup's Fred Rogers. Plain and simple. He took so many subjects that were uncomfortable, unpleasant, or otherwise scary and unspoken and confronted them. He made us face things like growing up (Dead Poet's Society) and the choices we make as we do so, facing the fear under the bed, real or imagined, and the freedom that comes when we do. He took challenging material (The Bird Cage / homosexuality) (Mrs. Doubtfire / loss of family) and made us laugh at it, even if there were no simple answers (What Dreams May Come / Patch Adams) to life's unfairness. He confronted the surreal (Dead Again) and the very very real (Good Will Hunting), the challenge of being yourself even if you don't think that is very good (Alladin). He made us laugh at our own prejudices even as we acknowledge them (Good Morning, Vietnam) and the absurdity of so many things in life. And at the end of nearly all of this films, the person you were laughing at was yourself, and not the thing you thought you could only ridicule.

I shall miss him.

Genius is often misconstrued, he had a talent that was unmatched in many ways but he was very very human. Understanding that he had a humans flaws and he was fallible is what made him almost universally appreciated and adored. The sadness I feel now is he must have felt alone and isolated, that's no way for someone who made such an impact on so many lives to go out. I can only imagine the pain he, and now his family feels, it's humbling and again completely isolated. There but for the grace of whoever your god may be... RIP Robin and you did "not go gentle into that good night..."

This does help understand his mindset, but I have been bowling for several years with a man who has pretty serious Parkinson's.

He doesn't have a lot of strength and is certainly not a power bowler, but he plays the boards extremely well and even if his average isn't all that good, with his handicap (bowling, that is) and his ability to play well in clutch situations makes me like to put him on my teams when he's available.

He lives a full life, although he has his bad days.

Elmer is almost 80.

I'd be very interested in your assessment Grady as a past clinician and someone who has been on the front lines of people who make decisions under fire. What is it that makes someone bow out? Probably impossible to simplify or distill into a single reason or cause, but why, why does someone who is seemingly so empathetic not allow others to care and comfort them? Seems counterintuitive and for lack of a better term, hypocritical.

I've got some experience in this area and I can tell you that I wish I had answers.

I think that in most cases of suicide, it is caused by distorted thinking that is very common in depression. People are not rational and the chemical imbalances that they have cause them to feel worse than most of us can imagine.

I don't know anything about Williams's life or the details of his condition, but I don't think it's that common for people to kill themselves because they get a Parkinson's diagnosis.

It's not even common to my knowledge for people who get a cancer diagnosis to commit suicide right off the bat, even if depression is common among those who are newly diagnosed, which is the case with a friend of mine now. Some may reject treatment or choose to end treatment, but it seems that most will give treatment a reasonable chance.

I have a friend who calls me a couple of times a year to tell me that she's ready to end it all. It's a very difficult thing to get these calls out of nowhere, especially when a few weeks earlier everything was fine and nothing's really changed.

Although I was clinically trained, my experience has more to do with direct services and case management, so this was not my forte, but I haven't met anyone who really has any answers, only theories.

What answers there may be are lost with the victim and I personally think that after a period of grief at the loss, it's best not to question too much.
