You could also choose a 3rd party launcher which would allow you to customize your screens and behaviors to your hearts content. I use holo HD and it makes a huge difference. Gestures, tabs, 10x10 layouts, scrolling docks...you name it.

I like this phone. I went to Best Buy to look at headphones & took a look at the new phones since there was no lineup. Have to say, very comfortable & wasn't too wide/big for my small hands.

Wow. Nothing worse than an iPhone thread, and reading nothing but the same guy talking about Android over and over.
People lose their minds over new iPhones. The Note 4 will hit shelves in a month, and not a single person is going to line up for it. Does that make it an inferior device? No, it's just different. Android is cool for tinkering, but I use the iPhone as my daily driver, and I'm loving the 6. My HTC One M8 is great for media consumption and as a WiFi hotspot. |

I'm thinking about trying the new iPhone and this could be the tipping point, what apps do you use for your file management on iOS please?

I wasn't bashing this thread, if you look at my username, I'm all about phones. They're a huge hobby of mine, and they also pay my mortgage and fund my watch collection. To top it off, my buddy is the one who started the topic in the first place. |

Dropbox on the S4 was also terribly programmed. Same for a lot of apps I used on the iPhone 5. It's like there was no standard that had to be met to make apps for Android, so a lot of the apps that I had from my iPhone were programmed badly in the Android. If you are referring to the OS file system, you can always jailbreak and do whatever you want. I've never had the need personally, but I did it for my son so he could mess with some of the games on his phone. Trying to get a file from email to Dropbox was a nightmare on the S4. Also, downloading a file from online was also a nightmare. I can't remember if I even found a solution. I remember having to do several weird steps with photos and files, like DL it from the mail to some odd spot, then hunt it down in some OS menu, then try to port it to an app, if that was even possible, or save it to the photo library if it was a photo. It was all like a bad dream now that I've been back with Apple for a year...

I like the iPhone 6. Getting used to the size slowly. I would have wanted old size on regular 6 especially since I don't use cases. ( I am a weird species that never drops his phone- hopefully I don't jinx with post 😀). With curves on this phone I can't hold as firmly as the 5. With an iPad mini IMO the plus is redundant. And I like to fit my phone in my left pocket. At least it fits but let's see how it does with tight jeans.
What I really like is iOS 8 which you can have on much older models. Even ipad 2 got the update. That support from Apple on all devices and ecosystem is what keeps me coming back to iPhone since its first iteration. I have had all the models. I would still have to say that from all the releases the biggest wow! and the nicest design has to go to the 4 for me. The 6 did not have the same effect. Looks like an iPad mini mini. |

I will say, the one thing I liked about the S4 at the time was that I could isolate a photo from a website to a single page and then use that HTML address to post pics on forum sites using InsertImage tags. But, when I switched back to the 5s, they had added that feature to Safari as well in their OS update.

Stock Android is very nice, but nothing beats iMessage when all of your friends have it, too. I use it on my laptop and desktop, so even if my phone is updating / dead / away from me, I can still reply to texts and FaceTime calls. My wife travels a lot for work, so I love having FT being integrated into everything I have. This 6 has been treating me well for the first two days. Battery has been great, and the front-facing camera is awesome, which I use more than I care to admit to send pics of myself and the pooch to the wife when she's not around. She loves that.

I am seriously doubting that you have really have used an Android device. I asked you a genuine question because I am seriously thinking about an iPhone 6 but your answer just makes no sense whatsoever. I will not be engaging with you further.

I remember trying to download PDF journal articles to read from my e-mails and the Internet and having to jump through hoops to find them and then to read them. It was the biggest pain in the arse I've ever encountered on a phone. The S4 downloads them into some obscure place on the phone that you have to reach through its convoluted menu system. With apple, it would just open the file and you can read it! That sums that OS up for me, and it is exactly why I will be staying with Apple for awhile to come... Go shill your favorite phone on an Android thread....

I don't like that iOS 8 has picked up those boxes that show the spell correction word options when you type, The S4 had that and it annoyed me. I'm going to have to turn that off soon; it is way too distracting for me.

I really like Apple products because they "just work"! In my home, I have "upgraded" to all Apple products from phone to desktop / laptop and tablets. Even my routers for WiFi are Apple now. Technical issues have dropped to almost none and all of my data is synchronized between these devices. I am very happy with Apple products and Apple technical support.
I was always a techie buying based on the most advanced hardware specs. I have built hundreds of Windows based PC's. My first "Smart Phone" was an Android based phone. My first tablet as well. They did not work well and in fact I had lots of issues. The Windows based systems gave me so much trouble with malware that within three years they were ready for the garbage. These products are meant to be tools we use to enhance our lives. I grew tired of the constant repair and troubleshooting of the tools I needed every day. Until something changes to prove that there is a better product that "just works", I will stay with Apple products. I can not wait to get the two iPhone 6 plus I ordered. |

I will say though, I've not had the best time integrating the airport stations into my house with Verizon FIOS. Given, I have old airport express stations at this point, and perhaps I should see if a firmware update is possible, but the stations seem to stop working completely intermittently for some reason. Only one of them seems to be consistent, and the other ones seem to stop working often while I am using them. I don't know what the newer ones are like, and I honestly shouldn't have to buy new ones, as the ones I have are "n" protocol, but these have been a real pain to implement throughout the house and keep running. I've tried resets of the stations, of the entire network, etc., but the problem seems to be recurrent and unpredictable. It is only a problem on portable devices and laptops, because the desktops are hardwired, but with limited cell reception in the boonies (and data usage costs) it is a hassle to have to be near certain wireless stations that are more consistent. I agree about ease of use of the computers and portable devices. There is no comparison to other options IMO. My biggest gripe is with Apple's desktop hardware options and with its inability to garner more games. I like building my own gaming systems, and I wish I could easily use OS X on the systems I build and have all the drivers I need to do so with SLI and other hardware. Likewise, I would like to see more of the high-end games available on OS X. I understand that a lot of what allows Apple to be Apple is not letting their OSs become the wild west, as that is what causes the chaos seen in other OSs (computers and phones). The more an OS is ported to diverse hardware setups, the less cohesive and coherent the OS seems to become in order to accommodate all of the options on the market. It is a little annoying sometimes, especially if you like playing a lot of new games on the market and are sick of the Windows OS. At the least I would like to see Apple on top of video drivers so that high end SLI can be implemented immediately when new video cards release, like the GTX 980 hitting the market. Maybe it would give the gaming industry more reason to try and release titles for both systems. Perhaps you can't have the streamlined Apple experience without these niggles though, because if you are adding devices at day one you are creating an exponential need for technical support due to hardware conflicts and driver issues. Then it wouldn't be the Apple experience anymore. I guess I'll have to keep using both a Windows and Mac to do all the things I want to do for awhile to come.

In our home, I have two Airport Express units (newest version, working to extend wifi signals), an older Airport Extreme working as a second router to extend the wifi network, and a current model Airport Extreme serving as our router that is connected directly to the cable company. This set-up has worked perfectly for some time now and provides us with connectivity in many corners of our home that previously did not have a reliable wireless connection. I have heard that the built-in routers supplied with FIOS have created some compatibility issues. The Express routers are generally used for "Extending" an existing wifi network. The Express routers could be used as your main router or bridge router to extend the reach of the FIOS router in your home but their range is limited by comparison to an Airport Extreme. I found that for the Express routers to work well, they have to get a fairly strong signal from the main router or they will tend to work and then not work. I know with FIOS you pretty much have to use their router, but I believe things would work much better if the main router was an Airport Extreme instead. I am not an expert by any means, but what I have described has worked very well in my experience. |

It was a year ago, so I don't remember exactly which apps did what or were giving me the most problems. I used dropbox, photo tools, PDFs, and e-mails a lot. I do remember that downloading files was ridiculously difficult. For all I know that's completely different now, and apparently according to Dave, Dropbox app has been improved since I used it. I read journal articles for the work I am doing intermittently, and it would put the files somewhere obscure when downloading them. It wouldn't tell me where it was putting them either. I would eventually figure out where they were being stored, and then could move them somewhere else. By the next time I downloaded an article, I would forget where it would put them again and have to repeat the whole process of looking up the details online. It became extremely annoying. I like being able to just open it and then save it to a place of my choice on iOS if I need to. At that point in time S4 wouldn't even let me open PDFs at first (it didn't recognize the file type!), and I had to go about downloading a separate app like Adobe just to read the files. Then I had to open it with that app somehow IIRC. With Apple it was all integrated (except for Flash, which they apparently don't like) and easy. Perhaps they've fixed a lot of that stuff by now, but I won't be switching back anytime soon. Perhaps in a few more years I'll be up to trying again. I love technology, and it would be nice to have a bright(and very pretty) OLED screen, but the functionality was dysfunctional for me, perhaps because I've been using iPhone since the first model. My biggest gripe right now with the iPhone is the memory. Hopefully they will add more in the 6s Plus. I don't like the phone reloading webpages when I go forward or backward in the history or when I open a new page and try to find information or a link and then return to the text box. It erases all the writing right now. I would like to be able to start typing into a forum text box and then go do other tasks on other pages briefly and return to what I was typing. This is especially annoying when I mistakenly swipe forward or backwards with my finger while typing into a text box and Safari changes the page on me, thus erasing everything I wrote completely. That to me is extremely annoying. There is no way to turn this feature off. The feature itself would not be so annoying if it were programmed better. Right now it changes the page based on length of swipe and/or acceleration. So, even if you don't make a long swipe but it is done quickly enough, it changes the page. If they eliminate the acceleration component, then it wouldn't happen to me by mistake. At the least add something to either turn off the feature or moderate the acceleration and swipe lengths. That, or make the memory larger so pages don't reload. I prefer both, but the former would seem more important, as then I can turn off aspects of the swipe that are causing the problem in my case. Anyway... Rant off....
