Hello from Cambridgeshire, UK

Hello all. I joined this site a couple of days ago so I thought it was time I put virtual pen to virtual paper and introduced myself.

I have a GMT2 black/red with an Oyster bracelet. It dates from 1992 and I bought it from Darren Reay in September 2004. It is my first Rolex, and I traded in an Omega Seamaster towards it. Before that I had a Tudor which was a 30th birthday present from my parents (so I suppose it's sort of my second Rolex!).

Last November I dropped it on the floor in the house and it stopped. I only got it back from Rolex last Thursday. The bill was for £830 (c. US$1,650), but fortunately my house insurance covered it. It came back with a new case (annoyingly, they removed the green sticker) and crystal, and it looks like new.

I don't have a watch collection, I wear this one every day. I had a standard clasp put on it in place of the expanding one because it rattled when I was driving and drove me mad. But it makes me feel good, and isn't that what it's all about?

Welcome to TRF, Dom!

I was in Cambridge for the wedding of a friend just last July - a beautiful area, to be sure! The bride and groom were recent graduates of Cambridge, and the reception was held in the courtyard of Corpus Christi College (photo below)!

I wore my Rootbeer GMT, of course!

I hope you enjoy your time on TRF, and we would love to see pics of YOUR GMT as well. We LOVE photos of watches here!

Please post pictures of your watch. Especially since it probably looks brand new now.

Okay, I've take a photo specially for here. I thought I'd given it a good polish, but it doesn't look quite so good at 6x lifesize! Unfortunately the camera never lies. I hope I haven't antagonized anyone by posting the photo in the wrong format....

Hey Dom; who are you kidding? That's a fine looking watch you have there. It looks like it came back in excellent condition from it's service. Wear it for many years in good health .

Welcome Dom,

I know Cambridge quite well and Trinity College in particular.

I didn't study there, like Prince Charles, Isaac Newton or Stephen Hawking, though I did have my own parking space for the period that I consulted for them.

Welcome Dom,
'Virtual pen to virtual paper' - I like that
I didn't know house insurance could cover you dropping your watch on the floor, that's amazing. I would hate to have to pay your premium next year as I expect insurers cover their costs with higher premiums.
Great looking GMT with the coke bezel

Dom: yeah, you are a lucky guy that your insurance covered that loss. Great policy, great company! Welcome to TRF. You have a great rolex. This is a wonderful place to talk and learn.

Well it remains to be seen what they will do to my premium next year, but it was only my third claim in twelve years so hopefully they won't be too hard on me....

Welcome Don!

At UKP830 that's a helluva service! Why did it need a new case?

Hello!

It wasn't just a service, it went to be repaired. They didn't tell me what was the matter with it, all I knew was it didn't work!

I don't know why it needed a new case. Maybe they spotted something when they dismantled it. On the other hand, there was a small dent on the corner of one of the lugs that the bracelet attaches to, where I had caught it on something once, so maybe they just thought they would go the whole hog while they had it in.

Hello there

I also recently joined this site, and this thread caught my eye. I am originally from Cambridge but now living in Aus. Have an upcoming trip to London & Cambridge and wondered if there is a Rolex AD in Cambridge? I remember there was years ago - name escapes me. Google and Rolex.com have been no use so far!

Would be v grateful if Dom (or anyone) could help. Please PM me if more appropriate. Could also use some London AD tips...

Cheers

Clive

I'm also confused.

The Rolex site says Mappin & Webb in Market Hill are an AD, but it doesn't mention Rolex on their site. Mappin & Webb are now part of Goldsmiths.

That store used to be Munseys. I remember taking my Tudor there to be serviced years ago. Shopping there was a real experience, you felt like royalty!

When Munseys were taken over by Goldsmiths, I think Watches of Switzerland, on the corner of Rose Crescent, became the dealer, but they closed some time ago.

So I fear I've been no help to you either!

Thanks Dom

I remember the old WOS store - the Rolex clock outside was (still is?) something of a Cambridge landmark. In a lovely spot next to the old market.
I bought an Explorer II (now sold) from them years ago and - as you say - the customer service was very good.

Hopefully whoever is there now is a Rolex AD. It would be nice to make a purchase from my old home city. Otherwise, London it may be...

I didn't think that obtaining a list of UK ADs would be so hard!

Cheers
