My uncle died on the Arizona .....my father was in Army in the Philippines in WW 2

A day that should hold more significance is the US.

12/7/1941

I attended the USCG Academy back in the late 60's. We were required to take a gunnery course on the use of 5 inch deck guns (left over from WW2).

Our course instructor was one CWO4 McDonald. A crusty old salt that sat down with us after class one day after class and told us this story:

He joined the Navy early in 1941; after graduating as a Seaman 3rd Class from boot camp, he was shipped off to the USS Arizona in Honolulu, HI.

On the evening of DEC 6th, his bunk mate wanted to go out and party but he had colors detail Sunday morning. McDonald said he would switch details with him and that his friend could sleep in....

Then next morning, just after 8 AM the Japanese attacked and the Arizona was one of the first ships hit. McDonald was still on the fantail when the bombs started to explode. He and 2 other young men were blown off the ship onto Ford Island; all were seriously hurt. His friend was killed because of where their berthing area was located....

He soon healed well enough to ship out again on another ship later in the war. After his enlistment ended, he joined the Coast Guard and didn't see action again until Vietnam.

Quite a lucky man; I am proud to have shaken his hand.

Dad was in HS in 1941, but joined the Navy in 43. Went to Great Lakes first, then to Pearl Harbor in 43. The place was still a mess then. Had some not so nice stories about what he saw on the islands in the pacific.

Pearl Harbour is a key event for Australians.
Up to that point, America was pursuing an 'isolationist' position and Australia was looking increasingly vulnerable to Japanese aggression in the Pacific.
The entry to the war by the USA (post Pearl Harbour) undoubtedly prevented the invasion of Australia (after the Battle of the Coral Sea & Midway) and what would have been a very protracted defence and resistance effort that would have resulted in hundreds of thousands of lives lost.
Regardless of the somewhat tardy response by the American government, Australians will always appreciate the sacrifice of the American servicemen. This is the reason that Australians have invariably responded to requests by the USA to fight beside them in various theatres since WW2.

If you haven't read it...pick up "Unbroken". The horrors these heros endured is hard to read but they endured...and the little revenges they get along the way are amazing.

I live atop the mountain range (ko' olau) that the Japanese pilots used for cover in 1941.

Saw a F-22 this morning, at 0800...pretty surreal! I just wish he was here 73 years ago!!
