Is LED bad for the lume?

Hi guys!

I just acquired my first rolex, the classic SubC, and I'm curious as to wether exposing the Chromalite to an LED light source to "charge" it is bad for the longevity? if over time with repeated exposure it will shorten the duration and decrease the brightness?

Thanks so much for your time everyone!

i carry my watch around with a piece of cardboard covering the watch face to prevent the luminescence from prematurely decaying. I would highly recommend you protect your lume as well from dangerous sources of light such as high powered LED's.

Really though don't worry about it. It will be fine no matter what light (except dangerous radiation) you throw at it.

Nah you'll be fine.. Enjoy it. Actually as I'm typing this I have my explorer sitting under a LED lamp.

This is exactly why people put them in safes, they weren't meant to be worn.

Some crazies on this forum do though, you'll see them going bonkers like pics of them wearing them in broad daylight, holding an alcoholic beverage with a submariner (I think one person may have said he showered with one?!?!) or worse, using a flash on their camera phone!

You'll be fine. It's meant to be used. If it goes bad they'll replace it at service no biggie

No offence to the OP but this may take thread of the year for

"Can I.......with my Rolex?"

You realize you are essentially asking if using light to charge your lume will hurt it when the whole point of lume is to do exactly what you are asking....absorb light.

Hi Daniel, welcome to TRF. Welcome, I noticed you just joined this month.

Hopefully some of the responses to a very polite question asked in the spirit of
acquiring knowledge regarding your new Sub will not turn you off to a very fine group of folks.

You will find that most here are very helpful. However.......there are a few in every crowd.....

True. So... to answer the question in a more helpful fashion... Light it up and enjoy the light show. Sooner than later you will find yourself not caring about the lume unless you're the type who wakes up at 3:00am in the dark just to check the time. Some do depend on this feature so your question is not dumb by any means. Lume is a science in its own and there are real technical answers to your question. AFAIK modern lume chems gets weaker as time passes. Some less expensive brands boast better lume, and base their sales on Lume. Your best bet is to thoroughly research the life expectancy of luminous materials used in watch dials, hands, bezels, etc. LED lights are no different than walking out on sunny day.

Forget that! I saw some idiot on another forum talking about swimming with his Deepsea!
