Considering getting my first Sub C in Japan

Hi guys,

Been in this forum for a while now, but haven't get a chance to become registered member, and not even a post!

hopefully this first post will be a good one.

I'm going to Japan for about 5 days to see my in-laws, also considering getting my first Sub Date (may as well say my first Rolex yet!), so there are many considerations here, not sure if I should get The Hulk Date or Black Date.

Did some research, the price in Japan is quite "OK" for pre-owned with Excellent condition (worth looking for and get a hold of one) but BNIB Sub Date are all expensive, heard that they are quite pricey, and not very competitive to other countries.

Question is how much of a bargain or discount can you ask for (I'm not talking about the tourist 8%)? 5%, 10%, more? Can you actually ask for discount in AD? or just shops like Houseki Hiroba or Kame Kichi or Jack Road that I can bargain with only?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

You should take advantage of the rare opportunity to get a Japan-only Grand Seiko!

5% is more than reasonable without even having to ask imo

Not really a big fan of Grand Seiko though but will see how it is on my wrist ;)
Yet still prefer Sub Date, or maybe GMT II Blue and Black.

Why don't you ask your local dealers or resellers first? So you can have some idea what's going on. And also cash transaction alone can reduce the price between 5 - 10% opposed to using cc.

I would first contact a few trusted sellers here on TRF. Don't forget about the applicable duties upon returning home.

Basically, whatever you do, don't get something you could get elsewhere!

I agree with this. You can get a Rolex here easily enough. Look into getting something exclusive to where you are travelling to. Grand Seiko

I agree to that cash is king for all negotiation, but i might as well use my wife credit card (get some points for her).

I may also as well visit Quark but I read threads in here that they are more expensive than Kame Kichi and Houseki Hiroba??

I'm taking advantage of the weak yen now, otherwise it's gonna be hard 😅 but will try to close a deal with them when i'm there.

The reason being it is one of the greatest lines of watchmaking in the world, somewhere between JLC and Big Three Range.

While I expect we'll be disappointed if you don't go Grand Seiko, if you do end up making the Rolex your big-ticket buy, at least use some of the savings to get one of the really high quality (but much more affordable) Japan exclusive Seikos.

I might considering that an option if I have some spare cash lying around after the Rolex purchase. Oh well, will see.

Preferably a Grand Seiko purchase, still...

:D

We're here because we love Rolexes, but for watch nerds it's hard to imagine passing up the chance to get something so much more high end for the same/probably less money, haha.
