The final 3: Choosing my first Rolex
Hey everyone,
Just joined the forum recently and I have been tediously researching as I am finally committing myself to save up for my first rolex. Searching within vintage and modern(ish) watches I think I have narrowed down my journey. Probably in order of interest I would say: 1) GMT Master II Ref 16710 with pepsi bezel. - I love the sportiness of the watch but it sets itself apart from other sport rolexes without compromising the general look. At Gettysburg college, the go-to watch for parents to get their kids for graduating high school seems to be the submariner. This seems to be a win win for me getting my desired look but at the same time not being the same as the others. 2) Submariner SS 16610- I still can't help but look at the sub because to people who aren't in tune with watches this seems to be the model that comes to mind when they think Rolex. The black goes with everything and is a sharp look that can be dressed up and dressed down (as if you all didn't know already) Downside: again going to a college with a big sticker price you see lots of kids who have these. 3) Vintage Datejust 1603 1972-1973 with grey dial - This is different from the others. The color reminds me of my very first watch that I bought myself: A grey nixon time teller P. You could say I have upgraded since then It also has a smaller sticker price. Let me know what you all think! Ian P.S. I added only the photo of the Datejust because this is the actual watch I would be buying where as I haven't found the others yet, Except I have a 16710 pepsi on the forum that I am eyeing up. |

make it happen
I purchased the Yachtmaster as my first because it reminded me of nothing I had purchased in the past..lol
I say go with the 16610 Sub and make sure you buy from a vendor on this board... so you don't get ripped off

I agree, Pepsi.
The dial is nice on that datejust, but that bezel is just bleh and dull. It does nothing for the watch except remove any chance of having sparkle/shine/gimmer when the light hits it. You'd be better off with a smooth bezel or a fluted one which will reflect and catch light at all angles giving the watch a gleam to it. |

Sub is more conservative so GMT with its red hand and coloured bezel would be my choice.

From those 3 choices I think I would go with (in order of preference)
1.) Pepsi 2.) Sub 3.) DJ

If you want something to stand out a bit from the crowd, go with the Pepsi.
If you want a timeless classic that makes a great foundation for any collection, go with the 16610 |

From your list, I would have said Sub, although I'm personally a Sea Dweller fan (had the 16600 and now have the 1160600). I did also have a GMT for about a year and I loved it, but not quite as versatile as the Sub in my view.
However. STOP PRESS. That DateJust is amazing!

I think in your case the pepsi gmt should be best to stand out from the college crowd and something you'll love too.. the sub would also be a gd contender but since you said most of the kids get them nowadays the you should be getting the pepsi gmt..
Or you could get a 114060.. |

Stick with your first choice! Pepsi.
Can't go wrong with the GMT or Sub. I'd keep the DJ on the back burner for your second. |
