Sunburst or flat Smurph dial on TT... value in the future
I know nobody has a crystal ball to predict the future, but I've been wondering if buying today a TT Ceramic Sub, it would be a better option, if available BNIB, to get the smurph version, as it had a very short run.
Would the uniqueness of that short run (2 years IIRC) make it a more desirable (read valuable) watch in the future? |

I don't think it will really be a big deal, really better to buy the one you prefer the most instead of trying to "guess" which may be more valuable in the future. There are wiser investments.

Hard to say. In the long run for sure less of the TT Smurphs will have been made. Rare enough for a premium. who knows, but in the near term I doubt it.
With WIS though you never know. |

Buy what you like, not because of the value it may or may not obtain. I looked at both before settling on the sunburst. It just has so much character. The smurf was just, kinda flat in comparison. Now if the surf was the only option, I would have bought it without a second though. The sunburst is just so gorgeous.

You need to buy the one you like the best on your wrist. In my case it was the Sunburst dial.

I don't think it will have much effect, if any, on future value.
As the other guys said, get what you like most. |

Sunburst or flat Smurph dial on TT... value in the future
And even if the flat were to appreciate $500 more in 10 yrs than the sunburst (which I doubt), it isn't worth wearing something that you don't really want instead?

I'm in agreement with the majority here...doubt that it's going to have much effect. And, as an owner of both, it wouldn't make any difference...the sunburst is the keeper for me.

Very few if any of the newer references will become collectibles. Pick the one you really like and enjoy wearing it

I am not a Rolex collector. But I am interested in firearms and people ask similar questions in that arena to - "Will model X or model Y be more valuable in the future?" "I bought the limited edition Whizbang Special and should I keep it in the safe because it will be worth a fortune?"
The answer is that there is no telling. But most won't ever become significantly valuable; they will just become used consumer goods. Only a small number will turn out to be significant, rare, and desired in 75 or 100 years. And, of the ones that do, they will be valuable to your grandchildren or your great grandchildren, and not to you. I think that is worth repeating - IF it becomes valuable, it won't be during your lifetime. Plus, the ones that will be truly valuable will be the ones locked away in a safe and kept in immaculate condition. So, buy what you like. Enjoy it. Don't worry about what it will be worth in 100 years or even 25 years. If you want an investment, buy into a mutual fund. If you want a watch, buy the one that you like on your wrist. |

I think that as an investment, my flat blue sub is a great watch.

Agreed... The flat is cheaper right now but in the future it's going to be a matter of a few $$ difference. Life is short And enjoy what you love! |

This. My stocks and mutual funds are making a Hell of lot more than I would ever make on a Rolex. Especially modern day versions since they are mass produced in large quantities. Buy the watch you love the most and wear it.

TT and gold watches are not the way to go for investment pieces.

Neither one is an investment. And certainly the Smurf dial seems to be less popular compared to the sunburst, so will it be more valuable? No.

Don't buy for investments. I personally think the sunburst TT is the best looking watch Rolex has ever made and my favorite of all the ones I've ever owned and I'm not even that crazy about TT. I also get more compliments on it then any watch I have ever owned period. My friends tell me its their fav of my collection past and present. It doesn't fly under the radar but its not gaudy at all. The SS, gold and sunburst blue just work well together. Again this is just my opinion.
