No idea...but these all seem plausible.

i agree probably because certain models only go to favoured customers and putting it on display would give the impression that it is available to buy

when I went to order my Sub C date, they took one from the safe to show me the piece as they had none in display. But this model from the safe was one already "sold" to another customer that was coming to pick it up the same week...
When mine arrived at my AD, I was deployed in a foreign country and it stayed one full month in their safe. Not in display, as it is not "for sale" |

I believe they want to use them as bait for repeat customers. From time to time I get a call from the manager at my AD saying hey we just got an X in would you like to come and see it.
An SS Daytona or a BLNR is an easy sale so the manager keeps it for himself rather than putting it on display so a Jr sales person can get the easy commission. No, they have to try and sell the less popular watches!

The more watches in the vault, the less thieves get in a smash and grab, which seem to be on the rise nowadays

Had this come up at my AD regarding my BLNR and the explanation given was they would rather sell it to a local or repeat customer and potentially create some goodwill. They preferred to not have it out where a tourist could walk in and buy it and never return. I can't say it really felt anymore exclusive to have them get it out of the back of the store.

This is my thought:
BLNR - Easy to sell, doesn't need to be displayed. When asked display and in turn make customer feel better This & have other models on display that don't sell as well, many may initally go for a less popular choice and then change for the popular one. AD's want to sell the least popular watches as they know sports watches sell easily.

I think the reasons mentioned above all have merit and every dealer may have varied reasons for doing so. A reason my AD has told me is an attempt to keep the sought after watches either local or keep them from the hands of those buying them and turning them for profit especially the steel Daytona when it was so rare.

All of the above is accurate, I do think a lot of weight around Rolex is a brand that is bought as a high end gift and achievement milestone, for a non watch person those in the display is more than enough. I assume AD's are required to take a certain quota of mixed models, so they need to work harder to sell some of the obscure DJ's than a white faced Daytona. Not quite sure about the allure of it coming out of the vault..... I could not care less, only be an issue of scratched, that said I have only ever bought two new watches my PP and AP and both were from their respective coffins and not on display.

Personally I think they know once someone sees the BLNR in person, they wont want it. It looks great in pics, in person, not so much. Swing and a miss IMHO.

Since AD's sell actual watches and not photos of watches how is this tactic supposed to boost sales?

So they can extract every last penny from your wallet when they make you feel like an exclusive customer by saying "oh we have one in the back, let me show it to you"!!!!!! Lol
