Buy the watch for yourself if it's a good deal.
What you do with it is your business.

If he has interest in watches then enjoy and share the passion together but let him get old enough to earn it. That way he will respect it, then in turn be responsible enough to take care of it. 11 is far too young.

Maybe after demonstrating his ability to get straight A's, honor roll, taking out the trash, washing dishes, staying away from drugs, alcohol, behaving orderly at all times until he's moved on to college, then give him his Rolex. :-D

I'm a relatively young guy in my 30s and that sounds like insanity to me.
I honestly can't fathom the inner workings of an adult mind that thinks strapping a multi thousand dollar watch on a child is a good idea. You want to know how to socially isolate and potentially damage the psychologically of a child? This is how. I also find it hilarious when people say their children are very mature for their age. A child is a child. Yes, they can well mannered and well behaved but they are still kids.

It's all relative. If you can afford it who cares what others think. Wealth is relative. Should kids be spoiled with a rolex? It's up to the parent but if you make millions per year 5 grand for a rolex isn't a huge purchase relatively speaking.
One time I was working with an attorney and someone commented on his shirt. He said dead serious, "Thanks. I got it on special for $200 which is great because I can wear it once and pretty much throw it away (instead of dry cleaning it)." |

when i read posts like this one, i just shake my head. What kind of world are you living in to gift an 11 year old child a multi-thousand piece of jewelery to walk around with? To each their own, I suppose, but you asked for opinions. Heck, give him a gold crown and a diamond encrusted chalice to drink his cool aid out of at school too.

I had my first Rolex, a stainless steel date just, on my 11th birthday. It was actually a birthday/Christmas/straight A's on my report card gift. I still have the watch in my possession to this day. I took care of it, never "showed it off", and always felt very special when I wore it. It symbolized many things for me, such as quality, luxury, value, ambition, reward, among others. I got my second Rolex, my dad's SS sub upon graduating high school. With straight A's, top 10 in my class. The point I'm making is the "right" age to gift a timepiece to a child is not as important as the right circumstance for the right child. If you've raised him right, and he has been taught the value of things, that's really all that matters. One of the proudest moments for me thus far has been the day I gifted MY son his SS Rolex Daytona with the black dial. It's the watch he asked for upon his high school graduation, and the one I gladly gave home when he graduated #3 in his class (of 634 students), had gotten a near perfect score on his SAT (missed ONE question), and got a full scholarship to his college of choice. Again, in my most humble opinion, it depends on the child and the circumstance.

Why not. I started racing open wheel series at 12 and wanted a Daytona back then hahaha. I think if you're okay with it and he loves watches that's great. I purchased a father son IWC silver dial a few years back for the same reason...but I don't have a son yet hahahah

I had my first Rolex at 11, (a pre owned blue Air-King) and to this day I still have it. I never wore it without my parents around and it really was the most special thing I owned at 11 years old and I took pride and joy knowing that my parents trusted me with such an item.
I really think that if you do buy it for him, he needs to appreciate the gesture that you're doing for him at such a young age, as even most 20 year olds don't even have Rolexes. If you really want to get him a Rolex, I'd suggest buying used/ pre owned. |

Not a good idea IMHO. Better to give him one when he is older for lots of reasons.

People live different realities. Wealth is relative as well like others have stated. Some people in this world walk miles for clean water to drink. Others live a much different reality.
You seem like a somewhat sensible person being that you feel conflicted enough to ask if it's ok. I have a son as well and love to spoil him. Sometimes when I give him somthing I wonder if it is to make him happy or myself. Because giving him a life I never had makes me happy. So are you doing this for him or for you? Lastly, I have been given nice things that I have cherished and respected, but none of it felt as good as earning these things for myself when I could. |

For me, I would give my 11 year old son an Explorer and not even bat an eye, but that is just me. He can earn his PM model at his leisure.
Also to be clear, it will sit in my safe and he will wear it when we go out as a family and not to school. Blast away at me lol, doesn't matter to me, he will still get one |

I'm sure there will be people who will say "No"
But I would beg to defer. When I was about 11 or 12 My dad has bought me a citizen eco drive, and I had lost it. So during a Christmas dinner my dad looked at my wrist and inquired about it, and expecting him to yell I admitted to him that I lost it. He immediately removed his omega sea master handed it to me and asked me to put it on. I still remember to this day, me being caught in the awe of the moment staring at his beautiful time piece which was on my wrist (which also happened to be a wedding gift, from his father in law). After that day he let me wear it occasionally (despite being 11 or 12). It is not only one of the two moments, that I look back on and say "it got me into watches". But it is also one of my fondest memory of my father I have, to this day (because I know how much he valued the watch). So I say, go for it! If you think you son is mature enough and can handle it, I would def say "do it". But you know your son the best and you know if he is mature enough for it. Oh btw I am going to have some work done on the watch (ie change the crystal and have it pressured test and maybe change the strap), and present it to my dad on my parents 30th anniversary. I don't think I had the same level of appreciation for that watch and even maybe watches in general, if it was not for that incident. Cheers |

My dadgave me a 31mm Datejust for my 13th birthday, if you wanna do it just do it.
Teach him to take care of it, not show it off, etc...

I think you should follow your instinct
My mother gave me my first watch when I was 10 or 11 y/o. It was a Seiko automatic she bought on a trip to Japan. Having a Seiko was a big deal at the time as hardly any kid wore watch in catholic school and none of the neighbor kids wore a watch. The watch was stolen at a public swimming pool as I decided not to wear it in the water even tho it said "waterproof" in the caseback. Someone stole my dry clothes and the watch was in the shorts. I told my mother about it and it was not a big deal. She bought me another auto Seiko on her next trip to Japan. I wore the watch for years and in essence that is how I got started liking watches. I'm still a fan of Seiko to this day (GS, that is).
At the end of the day it is your best judgement and your son. I say do it and let him borrow the Rolex for special occasions and such. |
