Why and how often..
Greetings TRFers, why and how often do you guys flip your Rolexes? Which Rolex will never leave your collection and why? Also, why have you flipped your previous Rolexes and how long have they stayed with you until you decided to flip? If you never flipped or plan on flipping any of your Rolexes, why not? Just curious to hear all of your opinions.
Also, wrist shots!! |

In the sixteen years since I got my first Rolex, I haven't flipped a single one.
Call me sentimental, but I get attached to my babies. I tend to pick watches that I've been yearning over for years. I also go with classics I adore, not the latest trends - which for me, helps reduce any flipping tendencies. Beautiful Datejust! A recent post of my collection in wrist shots here. |

I've owned a Rolex since 2001 and have never flipped one. Now, I have four. The first is a K series TT Blue Sub, followed by a Milgauss GV, GMT IIC, and finally a WG Daytona Panda.
So, I've never sold a Rolex , but I sold my Pt. Lange Perpetual, my Lange1 and my JLC SS Tourbillon. I guess I Just like the Rolex brand.

I could've sworn TRF was filled with more flippers! So basically you guys form close bonds with your watches and refuse to get rid of them?

Purchased my first Rolex in 2014..and owned a total of 3 Rolexes.
First one being a GMT II. Sold it as I thought I could use the extra funds...turns out sellers remorse took advantage of me. A few months later I picked up an Explorer II black dial. Wore it daily for 5/6 months and the GMT II itch was still present....so I sold the Explorer II. About a month later I purchased a NIB GMT II from a trusted seller here in Canada and I couldn't be happier. Will definitely be holding onto this watch for an extended period of time :) |

Great choice. I'm trying to slow the flipping.

Why and how often..
Seems like that's the trend, flip and then sellers remorse kicks in!

I keep my watches. I flipped a Tudor Big Block years ago and have regretted it since. My watches are not an investment to me but I have seen most of them appreciate in value.

None are ever safe simply because I will inevitably want different new releases and I don't like to have more watches than I can wear in a week. I use to never sell but found that I had better uses for the cash than tied up in watches not being worn

I wanted to sell them whenever I bought a new one but I keep finding reasons not to. I will pass them on to my sons when they are ready.

I do not flip. I only buy watches that want to keep. Not much of a trend chaser. However, after adding the Tudor BB Red, will be adding a blue Pelagos (hopefully soon) and a Tudor Heritage Chrono. The 16803 and 16613, among others will remain.
Love your DJ. |

I want to stay at no more than 6 (a general agreement with wife), and I have gone from thinking a $3000 Rolex purchase was silly large to viewing $25,000 purchases to be a safe investment as an alternative to have a weekend car or boat or having a fancy daily driver. Given I have made money on the last 3 watches I have traded I don't feel bad about it.
That said I think I am essentially done, really happy with my current set, I may one day flip my TT Daytona for a YG Newman dial, but that will be the last move. Everything else is just as I like it. In the spirit of time lapse photography please find my collection as at Jan 14, Dec 14 and Aug 15.... Only two left from the original and the AP and Bark DD came and went.....inside the year. The moves to me all made sense, the Bark DD was a step up from the Datejust, the GP no longer did it for me so they both went for the DD. I want to own an AP but I found the 15400 was just too big and I tended to ding it for that reason, so the DD and the AP were both sold to bring in the Platinum DD which I am really loving. That makes me a terminal flipper, but not for much longer.

I flipped my TT sub, expy2, yg bulgari, jetski, snowmobile and 4 wheeler along with a bunch of other toys to chase a huge opportunity that I had. Other than to do that, I would never have flipped my rolexes (I think). Tags and omegas yes, but rolexes not unless there is a very very very good reason!
