Living on the Great Lakes it is incredible how fast conditions change. Particularly ontario it goes from calm to dangerous in 30 minutes some times.

When I was working in the insurance industry, I work for a firm that had 1% of the ships hull in this loss. I was in charge of it for my firm. It was my first and only maritime Loss to handle. Extremely interesting since all interests including those who had no insurance in the loss are tallied and then apportioned. You then pay your portion of the total loss up to the limits of your policy. In order to make the sailing ship to get permission from all of the insurers since she was the last sailing of the season.
Later when Gordon Lightfoot came out with the song it brought back reminiscence of this loss. Of course the loss of life was tragic.
