Trip to NC for furniture...deals?

Anyone ever bought direct from NC manufacturers? Thinking of making the trip to Kincaid's store and trying to determine if the deals are as great as you hear. Would it be worth making the trip from Chicago? Anyone's insight into their experiences would be appreciated!

I know a fellow leo that got some great deals, not sure if it was NC or SC and this was years ago but he said that they went down, made a bunch of purchases and had everything delivered here to Pa, if I remember correctly he saved thousands. Sorry I can't be of much more help.

I did back around 20 years ago in Highpoint.
Got a very good deal on a Bernhardt dining room. Saved around $6,000 compared to locally in Boca Raton.

We went to Furnitureland South in Hickory, NC, 10 yrs ago and did all our shopping there for the whole house. The best thing about this store is that they carry many brands and are arranged by rooms- that is dining room furniture, living room furniture, etc, etc. They have their own decorators who will help you choose based upon your preferences- make sure to take to scale floor plans of your rooms and schedule an appt in advance. They deliver anywhere in the US and set everything up- very pleased and will do it again if we build another house.

thanks selpo, was speaking with a sales rep at FS and the quoted prices on kincaid over email were ~20% lower than the lowest i found on the internet and that is before any haggling whatsoever. im thinking a trip down there would be in order just to see everything in person. was FS cheaper than other stores down there? did you have them price match anything or were they cheaper from the start?

Their prices were not only cheaper than anywhere but the selection and options were amazing- for example, we chose a Berhardt dining room set but wanted a darker stain and combination of leather and fabric upholstery for the chairs and it was not a problem for them. Good luck and have fun!

thx selpo, this is very helpful. how do you like your bernhardt? quality/durability good? i know they are a very nice and well regarded brand but im concerned bc they use wood veneers and not solid wood. thanks!

Great stuff. I live a few hrs from Hickory and my father used to work a custom furniture shop there. Only issue I run into is my wife loves antiques not new. You will pay more money but old style Amish furniture is hard to beat.

I was told ours was solid hardwood as that was one of our criteria but regardless, they are holding up great and looks as good as new- although, we don't use it very often.

Back in the 90's my antique stores were losing margin due to the Internet. I tried bringing in new furniture and it worked for a while, Highpoint was the place to go. That said the market is completely different now not sure you could save anything significant just buying a piece or two for your home

Is it still American hardwood and American manufacturing?

There is a lot of Chinese wood in the furniture business these days. Not that wood itself is bad, I just don't trust the chemical treatments the unregulated Chinese industries use.

We bought our furniture in 2006. At that time, manufacturing was being moved to china by the most furniture companies, we bought mostly American made ones except for the Wicker.
