Do you guys keep spare parts as vintage owners?

What do you guys do? Does vintage have to be this complicated?
I would simply like to buy a nice example, own and enjoy my watch, service it when the time comes, and that is all.

Do people buy extra crystals? Tubes? Crowns?
Not sure what wares a crown off in the first place if I am being very honest. Would like to hear your stories though.

Like to see what others do or think.

Considering that you take your vintage watch to the RSC you have to be aware that they might replace an original part by a service part and this will decrease its value. Just a quick recall for those that aren't aware.

As I collect only divers, I have some spare 1665 and 5513 and also 16610 insert. Some 703 crown and tubes and also some service tropic 19 and 39. And some vintage sub dials also. keep them in a drawer just in case. If I have to replace a part I do it myself.

I would surely take it to a watch maker in the area that is very trust worthy.
I respect that you do it all on your own, but wonder if it is necessary as tubes or crown frequently need changing? What would cause a crown to ware off?

In my watches I never had to change any crown or tube. But the spare 702 and 703 I got are for my 5513 to be period correct. Because the crown has been replaced by the RSC few years ago for water resistance purposes but if one day I want to sell my 5513 meter first, I will make sure to install the original 702 crown/tube that it is supposed to have to keep its real value :)


But since you are asking some accident maybe happen to sub owners for example if the watch is hit by a rock on the crown area while diving this may causing damage in the tube/ case fitment causing water resistance issues. But very rare scenario :)

I have original replacement acrylic crystals for all my sports models and a couple of crowns.

Crowns, tubes and crystals are the only "wear" parts to worry about.

Plus when I get a "new" piece, chances are it needs something corrected.

Bracelets can be restored so that's less of a concern these days.

If I come across a NOS vintage bezel for my Daytona or Explorer II at the right price, I would probably stockpile, since mine are decently scratched up. Otherwise, I don't. I do, however, keep original parts taken off my vintage watches in case I sell so that they may be sold with the watch. Most of the "vintage guys" I know have SOME parts stashed somewhere, it's just not always an intentional accumulation.

That is interesting to say the least. So you remove the original bracelet and insert? What else?
Effectively preserving it for the next guy to enjoy in my opinion. I mean no disrespect and not sure if this is the norm either. Not something I would do personally however.

I had so much trouble sourcing a twin-lock crown and tube for my 5513 Sub that I bought an extra set for the future...

Now, if I can only find a 5512 that needs those same parts!!
