Great story and congrats on the Sub! Always great to hear from someone who is self-made, I'm sure you appreciate everything you have that much more.

I was lucky that my parents raised me to be independent, always had what I needed, but had to spend my earned money on what I wanted.

Congrats Howard that's a great story.

I often think that the most important ability that someone can have is the ability to self-analyze and figure out when things are going wrong.

I see you're from San Fran. I was stationed there during the 80's. It remains, in my memory, as one of the most beautiful city's, I've ever seen. Hong Kong and Rio are up there as well. I've never been to Europe, but hope to visit upon retirement. I hear the Alameda air station is home to the myth busters now? Anyway, thank you. I hope to bring the wife back there soon.

Congrats on an awesome watch.

I love a story where someone has done it on their own. It sounds as if you overcame GREAT adversity to get to your station in life. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for sharing. I retired six years ago. Being a cop can be tough but it can be so rewarding. Though I can't in all good conscience recommend anyone become a cop in these times, 30 years ago it was pretty cool. At least six of the kids I mentored through the police explorer program became cops and I'm proud of them.

You'll probably never know how many people you affected in a positive manner, but you should be proud. Stay safe these final three years.

Here's of shot of me urging folks to stay in their seats during a K-9 Demo while I was still working a dog.

Good on you Howard!

I think there is a fair amount here who worked their way up and a Rolex was their reward to themselves. It was for me.
