Sugar tax is well overdue, hope they extend it to chocolate, sweets/candy, packaged meals etc too, 100% behind this. Cost of treating obesity related illness is increasing all the time and must be managed.
Lifetime ISA is also very good, in fact it's amazing. If you took it out at 18, always saved the max £4k p/a then by the time you're 50 the government will have given you about £50,000 free money assuming average interest rate of 3% (they won't stay low forever) over the 32 years they add to your savings. Total you would have saved by the time you can withdraw it all tax free at 60 would be about £400,000. All for you just saving £4,000 p/a. Personal tax free increase good but better is capital gains tax reduction, corporation tax reduction for us running them as is the news that it's only public sector workers being stopped using PSC's. Clamping down on tax avoidance by big corps all good and overdue. Investment in infrastructure especially in the North is welcome and good to see wealth being spread away from London/SE. Overall we need to tax (a lot) more in a wider way and spend less and gradually we're heading towards where we need to be. However another global shock or meltdown could derail it all in a week and for the next 5 years I wouldn't bet against it. |
