All the women in my life wear rolexes except for my GF. None of them are wis's or care to collect or flip. They are content and will wear them for decades. My mother just got her second after 25 years.....

Not much of a market for the 26mm. I tried to do a trade with a TRF trusted seller to upgrade the wife's watch. He wouldn't take a 26mm piece.

I think that some women are just more sentimental about the nice things they own. Whether the watch was gifted to them or purchased for themselves to commemorate something, it is harder for some to let go of the memories tied to the watch. This is just my guess.

For the most part, an with limited exception, women don't appear to be as into it as men. I think it is a check box for most. Nice watch, check. I see a lot of women into purses, shoes, clothes, travel. Same with vehicles as well as watches. Cool car, check.

Ask any man if he would like to own a Rolex watch some day and maybe 25% would say yes. Ask any woman the same question and I doubt even 5% would give you an answer.

I think part of it is also that women won't wear a used watch. Try to give a female a watch that isn't BNIB with their name on the card and stickers on it and see what happens....

My wife doesn't mind a used watch. The Patek i got her was used, yet she was too afraid of breaking it so pretty much never got worn. We've been looking at a DateJust for her. She only seems to care about having a pinkish dial and bling diamond bezel. We're still shopping online used of course because there are so many used women's timepieces that are far less costly than new.

There is no apparent shortage in the UK. Check out Watchfinders, they have pages upon pages of Rolex Lady-Datejust watches.

I think that women are less likely to flip because they tend to value sentiment to a higher degree than many men do. Many women are also less inclined to appreciate the idea of purchasing pre-owned. Not good or bad...just different. At least that is how my wife is. I purchased her a Cartier as a wedding gift 15 years ago and it is still her daily wear.

Think about it. What women would accept a second hand watch, even if it was a Rolex? What man would be stupid enough to give his wife/girlfriend/mistress a second hand Rolex?
Men are rational and see value. Women not so much. |

Pretty strong language Lee, some of our Wives have larger collections than us and couldn't care less about used or new. If my Wife fancies a piece that is discontinued, pretty sure she is comfortable with it being used.

In the last five years I have flipped four and my wife has flipped three so I have a slight edge at the moment. Actually, we have decided we are both done.

The price points are such people tend to keep them when unused. The other side of this is women (among my circle of friends) prefer more bling and tend to care less about originality (form over function) there are plenty of women's watches out there but they are not where we normally look. I see hundreds in the many dimond shops in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
As for Lee's observation, stupid is as stupid does. I just picked up an 18k / SS 31 Datejust for my wife with about 2 carats of dimonds in the bezel, face and the lugs in the secondary market. I paid for it with money "left over" from my 50th birthday fund after doing really well a 16628b in the secondary market (obviously as the 16628 was discontinued in 2012). Both are minty and were had for stainless versions of what the pair would cost. |

Tend to be in fairly poor condition....
In general they are very poorly taken care of - don't get serviced and women like to wear them "loose" which knocks the snot out of the bracelets stretching them to the point that they can't be worn (sold) unless replaced.
Factoring in the $$ for a new bracelet, and complete service which they almost always need, makes them a very poor (low value) trade in item and the owners tend to keep them, get another one and pass the old one along to a family member/sell to a friend or throw them in a jewelry box... A lot of them turn up at estate sales... Learned this recently from a jeweler as I was hoping to trade up my wife's DJ for a newer one but when told the (low) trade value (I have had it serviced and clean it for her but the bracelet is pretty bad... not nearly as bad as some though that can literally be tied in a knot) will probably just keep it for a niece who starts college soon. This "keep it for someone else" phenomenon is what holds many of them off of the pre-owned market... |
