Which White Gold Sports Rolex should I get?
The gold line up in Rolex's GMT and Sub watches are quite amazing. However, the yellow gold is too indiscreet for me, so I am considering the white gold variants.
I'm thinking about getting either the 116719 BLRO or the Smurf 116619 LB, but can't decide. There's heaps available in both models on the secondary market in BNIB or super fine (1) condition. I note that the BLRO on average is about $2K more than the Smurf, if both are in the same condition. I would very much appreciate your advice on the following: 1. Why is the BLRO more popular? Is it only because of the two tone ceramic bezel? 2. Is the Smurf unpopular and considered a dud amongst watch fans? I always thought that the subs were at the top of the tree 3. Which is likely to hold onto its value in the future the best? 4. Does anyone know what the gold scrap value in those bad boys would be? The AD's in Sydney have the new BLRO and Smurf in stock and I've seen them in the front display window, not that I would buy a gold watch from them! When was the last time anyone saw a SS Sub-C or Batman in the show case?

BLRO....no disrespect to Smurf owners but I don't think I could live with that blue.

Both are very desirable. The Sub has been out for awhile and represents (my opinion) the closest thing you can get to a SS blue Sub which everyone has wanted since the beginning of time.
The BLRO is the closest modern SS Pepsi you will now ever be able to get as they will not be doing it in SS anytime soon. On the secondary market the prices will be different to reflect age of the piece and availability. Clearly there should be more Subs given the production years over the GMT. Both pieces will retain their respective used values as long as the demand is strong (most likely the case) Scrap value would be a fraction of the total value in any case. |

I'd say the smurf is more popular- it's been out longer. The blro upset some who wanted it to be in ss and felt Rolex was being greedy for releasing it in WG.
I narrowed it down to these two and picked the blro. |

List price for the BLRO is 1200 Euro higher than the LB. Why ? only Rolex knows, perhaps because it's a new model. Higher list reflects in a bit higher price for the GMT on the grey market.
Don't know if the GMT is more popular than the Sub, again only Rolex would be able to tell you and they are not going to do that. All the rest is mere speculation. You can't go wrong with either, but do try both on several times with different lighting. The color of the dial of the Sub changes depending on the light and I found the Sub to have more presence. I chose this one; (Happy hunting )

That's a tough choice.
I've always chosen watches by function first, so for me looking at this pair, I'd say do I need a Sub or a GMT for functionality. They are both equally stunning. Good luck with your choice |

For me, the Smurf wins hands-down. As for popularity, I always see the BLRO in store (slow mover) while the Smurf is never available.

The MSRP of the BLRO is about $1,400 more to begin with. That probably explains some of it's higher current appeal and price point in the secondary market. On top of that it's the relative new kid on the block so there are fewer on the market for sale and fewer used pieces to compete against BNIB and LNIB.
Both will hold value relatively well for a PM model if bought right (i.e. not so much against MSRP). The choice is largely personal. The blue dial Sub is definitely more of an eye catcher, the GMT equally attractive but just a bit more subdued I think with the black dial.

When I bought them in SS, I bought the GMT first and then the SUB. Both got flipped and now I have them both in WG. This time the SUB came first.
Both change color with the lighting. No wrong choice here but I guess if I had to give the edge to one, it would be the SUB, with its Glide Lock Clasp. Up first the SUB.

Between these two I think the 116619 is a bit more special. I really do like the pepsi, but it has the same dial as the SS version, which is what kills it for me. Yes it is way under the radar, but maybe a bit too much?

Smurf a dud?
Whatever gave you that idea. It's the opposite of a dud. The exact opposite. Both excellent watches. But in the end, no one can make the right choice but you. Is the blue too blue? Will the slightly off hues of the blro bigger you? Do you prefer ezlink or glide lock? Do you travel between time zones? You win either way.

Of course, owners of both are going to post great pictures, and tell you how great theirs is...but you're just going to have to see which one looks best on your wrist.
But here's my vote... |

Of those two, the GMT (just because I prefer GMTs), although I also like the WG Yachtmaster II.

Howdy,
Of the two BLRO for sure. For some reason the blue on the sub does nothing for me. The BLRO just sings more, but..... It would sing a lot louder if I knew what color it looked like most of the time. I LOVE it when it look dark blue and cranberry, but not so much when it looks purple and pink. Not being able to see it in its natural environment (non AD lighting) makes it hard to pull the trigger on it. Congrats either way as they are both lovely! Take care, Ruddiger |

I've heard it all. The blue on the Sub is flat and boring or too bright. The GMT isn't different enough from the SS or the bezel insert is purple/cranberry rather than blue/red. Ultimately all of these will resonate with someone. You've got to decide which applies to you (or doesn't).
For me? I'd throw caution to the wind and own both. The ONLY correct TRF answer. |
