If I could, it would be the BLRO.

I lived this experience and agree. Currently enjoying my blro. Smurf in sun was too bright for my tastes

If I was going PM, it would be the WG Sub.

As for value retention, I would guess it would be much of a muchness. You're going to take a big hit on pretty much any PM Rolex, especially if you buy new from an AD.

YG Sub
WG BLRO

I think the above is my traditional view in respect to icon association.

Like has been said, you really can't make the wrong choice with these two.

I had the same (1st world) dilemma and tried both on.

The Smurf just sang louder to me so will be my next purchase.

You can't make mistake there. But I would try both on and see which one sing better for yourself . That's exactly what i did two weeks ago. Smurf was nearly perfect for my style and skin color. Blro is another stunner but dial and bezel combination was a bit too louder for my liking. I'm happy with my Smurf now. Blro will be my next WG.

Those are big bucks. Why no the BLNR, looks better(or the dame) , why no the bluesy? If you want gold the yellow gold blue sub is the way to go. Again White gold by itself is impure gold.
Gold subs are very heavy too.

Of the two, for me, the Smurf. However, when I lined the smurf up against a white gold Day Date 40, I bought the Day Date. No contest.
You never know what will happen when you actually get these models together, and on the wrist. That's the test.
Interestingly, my partner really didn't like the colour of the Smurf...and she wears a pink Cartier for goodness sake.

It's not. The price discrepancy is a function of both msrp and time on market.

2. Is the Smurf unpopular and considered a dud amongst watch fans? I always thought that the subs were at the top of the tree

No. Just no.

3. Which is likely to hold onto its value in the future the best?

I'd say they are equal. Good models don't fair as well as SS in most cases.

4. Does anyone know what the gold scrap value in those bad boys would be?

Nowhere near enough to justify the cost over an SS BLNR. You would never scrap this watch unless gold goes through the roof and past the moon.

The AD's in Sydney have the new BLRO and Smurf in stock and I've seen them in the front display window, not that I would buy a gold watch from them! When was the last time anyone saw a SS Sub-C or Batman in the show case?

Last time I visited my AD.

You know that state farm commerical with Chris Paul? I think there should be a commercial with mike where he is always telling people to buy both even as a young child.

Growing up mike was selling lemonade and iced tea at a stand in front of his house. He convinced all the customers to buy both and one day golfing legend Arnold Palmer visited his stand. The rest is history.

I chose the BLRO. One of the deciding factors (which has not been mentioned thus far) is i find the GMT model more comfortable than the submariner due to a lower case back. Sits really low on the wrist like a Daytona .

For me the blue dial of the 116619 makes it feel more special - plus I already have BLNR and don't actually like the Pepsi style bezel.

Hi

I personally vote Wg daytona

But re (4) - depending on your exact currency and what deals you can cut : I say value of gold is probably an approx 20% value of watch.... totally irrelevant to your decisions tho

probably represents better value than the steel as a fraction of the worth of a steel watch
