ADs selling Daytonas

Just talked to a local AD and they told me that only prefered customers can buy the Daytonas when they have them in stock.

I know the new ones are hard to immpossible to get as well as the older one but man such a sad business practice. I have money you have product but wont sell it.

I know this is not uncommon but man I am glad our TS here don't have that attitude.

Yup.

The TS's are asking huge premiums...but if you want one badly, you can have one.

I get that the ADs want to massage their regular spenders, but fat chance of getting my business by telling me my money is not good enough. A salesman at Turdneau basically said that to me - about the old SS Daytona.

I've since turned off of Daytonas. Happy with my Speedy Pro and Zenith El Primero 1969.

I see there are plenty of Daytonas here in classifieds. Granted not all are the new one but if the only difference is a ceramic dial vs ss dial I can live with that difference.

I think Rolex is definately hoarding the stock on these things.

Has anyone figured out why? Its not like flooding the market would make them cheaper. Theres enough of a demand they could make tons of money.

Guess thats why I dont run Rolex.

What's wrong with AD's rewarding loyal customers? Most good businesses focus on repeat customers and I don't see why this is any different. I got my Daytona-C from Tourneau - made the call and had the white face in 24 hours.

Is this local Tourneau or NYC? Did they charge you above MSRP?

I made a call to someone in HQ, they located a white unit in Chicago, and I picked it up the next day (happened to be there for business). I paid MSRP and had tax waived as they sent it to NJ.

ADs selling Daytonas

I wanted a chronograph and was ready to buy a Daytona since I have been a Rolex enthusiast for like ever...
But this whole "I am selling this product you can't get" and only "such and such" can get it, is a huge disappointment relative to the brand. Some call it supply/demand, I get it. But when things start looking and feeling like profiling and discrimination, it leaves a bad taste.

I bought one as a first time customer from an AD. Not everyone operates their business the same way.

Nothing is inherently wrong - as I said in my post. However, when you inquire about a Daytona and the Turdneau sales guy says, "We don't have one, but even if we did, it would go to a VIP." I.e. F-off. You'll never get one here.

So...he's basically lost me - as a customer for life. Why would I ever spend a dime in his store. Would I do it / buying watch after watch hoping & praying to *someday* .... *someday*... have what it takes to be a VIP? Heck no. I'll wait until the rush wears off - if I buy one at all - and buy from a TS.

Agreed, certainly shouldn't have said it that way.

Did you end up with the white or black face Daytona-C?

Thanks,

White. I went in to buy a Seadweller but ended up buying a Daytona.

I like the look of the daytonas but it does suck that they are so hard to buy in store. Guess thats why TSs are around.

Lucky duck. I've casually visited 4 or 5 ADs the last few weeks crossing my fingers hoping they'd have one.

I visited three. One said they don't do waiting lists but would call and first to arrive could buy. That wasn't for me. The second said they would start a list in September. The other said they could order on no problem. Got it a week ago.

I may be lucky. They may be a great dealer. It may be some combination of those.

When I first got it I tried to do a trade for a sea dweller with some sellers on here but I would have lost money so I decided to keep. That leads me to believe they aren't really that hard to get.

Yeah, you only have to pay the 50% premium to buy one from one of the TS here.
That's enough to make me not want to buy one from him.

During the last few months I visited ADs in Rome and Kuala Lumpur. In Rome I have seen plenty of Daytona (non-C), even SS Daytona was available for sale. Did not ask price as I already bought DJII. Also, in Kuala lumpur I have seen plenty of TT and PM Daytonas. I think that generous discounts were possible for that models.

I think that after few years this hype on Daytona - C will end and it will be possible to buy this watch by just visisting AD :)

My only new Rolex was the first one (16610) 21 years ago..... ever since buying used ones so don't have to hear that crap from AD's. There are plenty of good offers here from TS's and other mates, so no need to pay full MSRP unless you absolutely need to be the first to ever touch your watch outside of Rolex!

Agreed......as a business owner you always want to be gaining new customers and taking good care of those who have helped you build the business. It would have been appropriate to simply say " would you allow me to take your contact information and I can call you when one becomes available" with the understanding it may take some time. The AD's statement could be construed as "my money is not good enough" and it's simply easier to not even go down the path of how he is allocating stock.

Why would you need to call HQ when you happen to know the owners of Tourneau well "who handled everything"?

You picked it up in Chicago the next day when you were there on business but they sent it to NJ so you can waive the tax??? Gotta say I am confused

How would you compare your nautilus to the RG YM..I like the white dial

I wonder if Rolex can swap out the bezel on an unsold Daytona to the new ceramic and sell it as a new issue?

Totally agree with you Speed! As consumers the only we vote is with our money and if someone ever spoke to me like that I would opt not to do business with them.

Sorry I wasn't more clear. I initiated the transaction by speaking to Tourneau's private equity owner. The Tourneau HQ located two in the system (black and white) and both were in Chicago. I happened to be heading there for business, so I completed the transaction and had it sized in Chicago. They had just closed their NJ store, so they were able to send it to my home in NJ so I could save on tax.

As for my RG Yachtmaster vs my 5726, I think they are totally different. I wear my Yachtmaster on the weekends and when I'm on vacation. My Nautilus is one of the watches I have for my work rotation.
