As regards to your watch question, I think you are over worrying a bit. Whist the 16710 is prone to catching cuffs (not a good idea in the office) it at least fades into the background.

Best advice I can offer is stick with black leather with your navy suit when in the office.

Excellent choice Dan. They may even meet Mick's strict guidelines.

How do you know what is expected? And brown with navy is the new norm and the new expected, at least in many/most circumstances.

However in principle I agree with wearing what is expected, but I am a pretty lousy example of doing what is expected. I am in jeans (very nice ones) black shoes and a TT gold watch with dark brown strap in an office with mostly others in suits.

Either way, to the OP: unless you are in a VERY ridged work culture the watch is the one place a man can express himself and still 'conform.' Do what you want with your watch. Hell wear a rubber strap or a Nato with an orange dial if that is what you want. Specifically I would not worry about the dial unless you believe it will really hurt your career if you don't. But I would probably start looking for something new if you superiors care about your dial color.

Agreed. Brown (more so tan/cognac) is what is currently in style (at least here in the states) and has been for quite a few years now.

These shoes are actually burgundy, but you get the idea. The dial color is inert in context of the attire.

Of course not, this is the gap that has always existed with rolex and they just filled it with the new Tudor Black Bay

The white-dialed Daytona was my answer for this same problem. I didn't feel comfortable wearing a brown belt, brown shoes, and blue shirts with a black Submariner. I was happier with the green Sub, but eventually migrated to the slimmer 116520 to go with everything. From weddings, to the beach, to my hyper-casual work environment, the Daytona works. I'm working on figuring out what my second piece will be, and it might be a black Sub or a YG DD - two entirely different ends of the spectrum.

Matching a leather strap to belt or shoes is ideal but even that not a must unless matching belt and shoes are on display then I def prefer matching band. The idea being that the accessories flow with the eye top to bottom. A simple black atrap on a watch and brown shoes are distanced enough for my eye and wouldn't look out of place.

I mostly agree here. If you turned up at Lloyd's of London not that long ago wearing brown shoes, you'd be turfed out on your earhole. Same went for having a pocket on the breast of your shirt.

Anyhoo, times do change and so does 'fashion'. Brown can look ok with navy as long as it's a lighter shade that's closer to tan. Not my bag but that's irrelevant. As has been said above, shoes and belt match.

As for watches, buy a Panerai with a couple of leather straps to match your shoes and belts and that'll solve your problems. Job done.

If you are going to start matching dials, might as well match it with your other half's handbag and get some brownie points.

Is that good or bad?

Black dial with brown shoes works fine too.

George Gobel once asked, "Did you ever get the feeling that the world was a tuxedo and you were a pair of brown shoes?"

Yes there is nothing wrong with that, Ascot racecourse is "out of town and formal dress is not so strictly observed there.

The hooray henrys showed perfect dress sense.

Royal Ascot is a tale of 2 cities. As they were not in the Royal Enclosure, they were fine, in the RE men are only permitted to wear black or grey Top Hats with Morning suits. Rules on ladies are much stricter, ladies hat's brims must be at least 10inches wide, and dresses must fall below the knee, and no thin straps etc.

I wouldn't worry so much about the dial color but if you have a watch on a strap, I would make sure the strap matches the shoes and belt (in tone, not exact color) or complimentary contrasting colors.

there's a simple solution to all of this sartorial decision-making...wear suspenders & carry a nice PM pocket watch & chain in your vest.

or you could say 'to hell with GQ' & sport a gold Daytona with your Converse sneakers...it all depends on who's controlling the 'power game' in certain business and/or legal negotiations.

freeing one's self from the surface-level scrutiny of others is the first step towards self-fulfillment.
