The real kings are all the blues giants that made the music possible for Elvis.

I'm into Sonny Boy Williamson (the first and true...not Rice) at the moment at his stuff is haunting, uplifting and simply gorgeous.

I've never really followed him, but I bought a CD with some of his Gospel numbers on this week and they're great .

He still commands a huge (posthumous) following and the likes of whom I doubt we'll see again - unless we see one of the fake ones !!!

I voted him for King, TR

Nothing better in the world than a hollowed out loaf filled with peanut butter, jam, fried banana and bacon.

What else is there to spend money on?

Another round and, oh yes, a good dietician .

His final years were a sad conclusion to a glittering career.

Anyway, Jim, pass the Sun-Pat and the Maple Syrup .

There is more to being a King than being a giant. All people are influenced by others (the Beatles were influenced by, among others, EP). If you don't like Elvis that is fine but give a better reason than this.

Elvis grew up on blues music, but he took that music and adapted it to produce a unique sound that caught the imagination of a generation, this in turn influenced the next generation of music innovators:-
John Lennon declared "Before Elvis, there was nothing." In comments recorded for the Anthology TV series all four band members spoke of him in glowing terms, with George Harrison (showing his knack for religious allusions) saying "Seeing Elvis was like seeing the messiah arrive."

I did a google search Elvis met the Beatles in 1965. These are the accounts of that meeting from those who were there. I don't think from these you can draw the conclusion that Elvis hated the Beatles but see what you think

I am a big Elvis fan. I never said I didn't like him. I've been to Graceland! He was a true talent, a very humble guy who respected his influences, and like Louie Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Muddy Waters who came before him, changed music forever. We both share a favorite singer, Dean Martin.
We all stand on the strong shoulders of the past. As Keith Richards says "there's nothin' new under the sun". Blues music generating from Chicago and Memphis, as well as counrty from close by Nashville were the spark that lit a very hot flame. And Elvis took it to another level.
Without the roots there's nothing to grow.

Good post, Dan.

I wonder if Elvis got any inspiration from the Man in Black, Johnny Cash?

I think you'll find it's not just influence...many could say Elvis was a one man white boy cover band. He took a more obscure type of music and reproduced the sound with just enough pop feel to bring it to the masses. If we are talking about the King, the real king would be the legendary Robert Johnson. His music and art was the wellspring from which all these other artists flowed. His sound today may be a little impenetrable but he was the originator and the true king or blues, R&B, Rock and Pop. People such as Jagger and Richards, Lennon and McCartney, Dylan, Clapton and probably Elvis himself would agree or would have agreed.

Considering they were label mates at Sun alongside Orbison and The Killer, I'd probably say yes.

Good stuff, Jim.

I've got the Man in Black on at the moment. Only got into him and Elvis in the past few days, but they're great.

The American recordings with Rick Rubin are tremendous pieces of work.

A great loss.
