You'll appreciate knowing that three of the saleswomen at the Panerai/Cartier/Chopard AD in our city wear 44mm Panerais...and they look great.

40mm is max for me. Even the 42mm PO seems too large for my wrists.

Admittedly a woman wearing something that makes her look more "masculine" can look better than a man that wears something that gives him a feminine look.

That's an interesting observation and I can believe it, but what looks great on a woman has very little to do with what looks good on a man. It's not just a different aesthetic; the intention, the context and the meaning are different.

Something to be said about both of these statements.

When I first strapped on a Rolex (16610), I had a kind of Road House moment: "You know, I really thought you'd be bigger." It seemed small--at least, smaller than expected. Then, after wearing it for a few weeks, it felt like the perfect size. Now and then I'll strap on my Marathon SAR for a while, which is the same diameter as my Sub but has a giant milled steel bezel. It feels giant, and then when I go back to my Sub, it feels smaller than before.

It's all relative.

That being said, there is an objectively "better" size and weight--at least for each person. My Sub is almost too heavy for running, hiking, etc. It slides around on my wrist; the Explorer-II, or the Sub on a NATO, feels better when I'm being really active. I also agree that a bigger watch is more likely to get knocked on stuff. Seems like I was always banging my SAR on doorways, but almost never my Sub.

Agree. My GF has tiny wrists and weighs about 105#. Today, she's wearing my Sub on a Bond NATO strap. It looks awesome on her, though the watch head is only slightly smaller than her hand.

That look would not work for me. It looks faddish: like some kind of oversized bracelet rather than a watch.

Are we to understand that 100,000+ men a year end up looking like women because they wear a Panerai, a Big Bang, or a Royal Oak Offshore? And the new Deep Sea, too?

I didn't say "men look like women" when they put on a gargantuan watch. I tried to make a point that a woman can put on a man's dress shirt, or man's watch, and look good. Even GQ has photo spreads of women wearing men's suits. But we never see a man wearing a woman's clothes in GQ (did you see how The Joker looked in that nurse's uniform in The Dark Knight)?

Anyway, I think I've made my point, and I don't want this thread to spiral out of control After all you were kind enough to tell me more about Shapur.

By the way, the Panerai looks good on you.

Who is everybody kidding.If ROLEX made the submariner
in a 44mm, 46mm 48mm it would probably be one of
hottest out there.As you see Rolex is starting to get
alittle larger with the DD.Only time will tell.I'm thinking
large.

PS I'm on the list for the new DD. Hopefully sooner than later.

Quite the debate here. I have been a Rolex person for over 20 years and I guess I am also a traditionalist. Although there is a place in the market for high end big watches, I hope Rolex does not jump into that market. In my opinion Rolex is about tradition and slow evolution of their watches. I wonder if generally this is a younger vs older person issue meaning younger wants watches that are larger and currently more fashionable and older likes traditional models and sizes.

It's a fashion thing. Some feel they have to look the part and that means wearing ridiculously large watches.

I've got watches ranging from 42-34mm and I think they all look good. It depends on the design really. For instance, I wouldn't want a chronograph on a 34mm case, it would look too busy and I don't want my AK that just tells the time on anything larger than 36mm - it'll look to sparse. And if we're talking diver's watches (which have thicker cases) I think it'll look weird if it was in a 36mm case that was really thick.

Personally though, I wouldn't touch anything under 34mm and over 44mm. I like variety but weird is weird.

Yes, 40 MM is the maximum for me. I prefer something smaller, like a 36 MM.

I just picked up this Zodiac V-Wolf 44mm. This will be the biggest watch I own. I don't think I'll mind the size, but it weights like half a pound! I haven't had it sized yet, but I hope the weight doesn't cause it to migrate too much on my wrist.
