A dress watch in my collection?

I am sure quite a few TRF members know about my collection. But just to indulge myself, I shall reiterate:

1. REC Watch P51
2. Rolex DSSD D blue
3. PP 5711 R T dial
4. AP 26320 blue dial
5. 116519 WG Daytona
6. VC 47450 dual time ultramarine dial

As you can see all of the above are sports watches. I currently wear my Daytona with black strap, PP and maybe the VC with alligator strap as my dress watches.

The truth is I am not much of a dress watch kind of fella. I enjoy looking at them as pieces of art but I am hesitant to buy one for myself. Since I am getting married soon and I feel like a proper dress watch is a rite of passage of sorts. I will have a good 6-8 months to decide which watch I should get.

Now some criteria:

Under $30k

Preferably with a AC or PC complication

Uncluttered dial

Simple elegance

In RG or PT

40-44 MM in case diameter

Let me know what you would choose :)

Watch funds available due to cancelled wedding?

Maybe a 5146R will do the trick?

Trust me if the wedding was cancelled, I will get a 5270G in a heartbeat.

Fortunately it's still on, all funds have been earmarked towards it in the joint account, I am just saving for a piece.

5146R, great choice, but I neglected to mention, I am a 6'2 guy who is quite built, I would prefer my watches to be between 40-44 MM.

PC in Pt under 30k? Nah.

The simple elegance part is good, you may want to ditch the calendar part. A JLC Master Calendar in rg would fit if you stay with the calendar. Actually, a rg JLC MUT Moon is lovely.

However, these would be even better for a dress watch:

Congrats on the wedding!

I think you meant 5712 RG in your post ;)

Great collection!

Well, it all depends on what aspects of a dress watch you are looking for.

If it were up to me, I would add a VC Traditionelle, as I love the simple clean look of that dial.

However, I would also consider getting a watch with a unique complication. I do wear my JLC Duometre as a dress watch to work....you can probably get one new for close to your budget, or at least mint

That is a very gorgeous piece, love the chrono version, I am definitely going to look into it.

I am also considering
Grand Lange 1 moonphase in platinum

FPJ Octa lune in RG/platinum

Glashüte Panograph in RG

That should give some bearings as to my taste. Simplicity with a little flare, elegant but a little out of the ordinary.!

Given your criteria i'd pick the IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar

Under $30k : retail is a bit over that, but close. You can get a used or grey market for your budget though.

Preferably with a AC or PC complication : PC

Uncluttered dial : as uncluttered as a PC can be

Simple elegance : yes

In RG or PT: available in WG or RG

40-44 MM in case diameter : 44MM

Cast your gaze upon H Moser & Cie, for a lovely, elegant dress watch, well within budget.

Seeing as you admit to liking something a bit out of the ordinary…
...how about an 8.5mm thick Arnold & Son Tourbillon in Palladium?
Or a plain and simple GP 1966 in Palladium also.
Bvlgari Minute Repeater in Platinum – should be able to get it with the VAT removed, bringing it under budget. Don’t overlook the Octo Finissimo either.
A Daniel Roth Tourbillon in RG – under budget once the 19% VAT is removed.

I would go with a Lange 1.

Great watch and personally one of my favorite dress watches in that price range.

Great choices, can't go wrong with any....I'd go with the Lange 1 - the timepiece that put ALS back on the map.

JLC is the way to go. The Reverso line in general is fantastic, and I echo someone's suggestion of the MUT Moon 39.

I had a 1931 Reverso Tribute, and while it's lovely, it just didn't fit my lifestyle and got moved. Make sure it's a piece you'll actually wear, and not just to tick off a box.

I think a collection needs JLC
1)JLC rose gold perpetual
2)JLC duometer line

Other options with a bit extra $

1) Langematic Annual cal
2) Patek 5396/5205R
3) Patek world time

44mm is too big for a dress watch, but the suggested PC IWC works

I wouldn't do it. I did and bought a lange 1815, flipped it in short order because like you, I'm not a dress watch guy.

Plus, your 5712r is the perfect dress watch in my opinion.

Thanks for this suggestion, I must admit IWC never appealed to me, but this PC is gorgeous in its dial layout, definitely a contender.

Hahahah I like these obscure brands, of which I have always taken a fancy to Arnold & Son. I love their HM Perpetual moon series. However, I have a vehement distaste for the Tourbillion complication. Apart from the disputable qualities of its "anti-gravity effect", my main reason for disliking it is mainly cultural, every Nouveau Riche Chinaman has one, over here in HK it's nothing but an obnoxious status symbol. Most tourbillion owners here knows nothing about the history of tourbillion nor do they have any sophisticated appreciation of horology. I am Asian myself, but these are the last people I want to associate myself with. They are generally brash, obnoxious and plain uncouth.

The 5712 R is such a versatile watch, it could worn with a polo shirt and it could be worn with a three piece suit. I have never dabbled in the dress watch category and would like to venture into the unknown. Besides my Grail watch is a 5970G or a 5270G blue dial, so I am not completely adverse to the idea.

AMAZING

Exactly, get what you like, not what you think you should for some reason, the 5712 is perfect in the dress watch sector but much more interesting than most dress watches, so I clearly wouldn't in your shoes...

Pop down the Jaeger-LeCoultre boutique during lunch hours and tried this on. Wow I must say, this is ranking very very high on my list right now

Looking at your collection, you basically have 3 watches that flex quite well as a dress watch, your Patek, AP and Daytona. You can find a used Patek 5146 for under $30K, seems to cover what you want.

I’m not a Tourbillon person myself, once past the micro mechanical engineering aspect, but I wouldn’t allow a bunch of twats to dictate what I could or couldn’t enjoy owning.
Those types are not buying into horology – at least not in any meaningful way – they’re simply buying a price tag and into status symbolism.

Prefer simplified look for a dress watch, one, maybe two complications at most and I could even live with none. I'd go JLC if new, and VC is used.
