Daytona anniversary edition (116506) not a great seller?
I stopped by a Rolex boutique yesterday asking about the white gold 2016 Daytona (not out yet) but they happened to mention the platinum one and I was surprised to learn it had an MSRP of US$75000. The surprising part is I've seen these pre-owned for under $50k. Is this typical for precious metal models? Or is this one just not popular?
I happen to like the ice blue dial. Pairing it with brown wouldn't have been my first choice however. |

Typical for the PM watches, so just need to make sure to buy "right" particularly if you may not keep it long term. Makes it difficult to buy from an AD as even a good discount from one doesn't line up well with gray or secondary markets.
I said the same thing about the brown. Was a WTF??? moment for me when I saw it released. However, I actually found that it indeed works. So much so I bought it (but not for $75k ) |

For PM Rolex you should not pay MRSP even at an AD

Way too expensive for me and I will never own one for that reason.
That being said, I love the Ice Blue face but not paired with chestnut brown. But the Ice blue is just gorgeous. |

If by popular you mean common, it indeed isn't. But then again, even at grey prices, a 50k watch will never be common...

I would suspect (but certainly not know) that Rolex has some sort of proportionality ratio for their PM models...obviously a $75k watch is not expected to sell at the same rate or volume as a $8k watch, just simple economics.
Now, how well the Platona is doing within that proportionality ratio, is anybody's guess. I would think pretty well...there seems to be a good number of them available without the market being saturated, which is probably what they're shooting for. Just my two cents. |

Chaps
The one odd fact about Rolex is that the low value stuff such as Explorers, SS GMT's and Subs always holds their value. I suppose it is down to the fact that they look classy and are affordable. The more expensive YG models with blingy bracelets just looks loud and it puts a lot of people off. A friend of mine one said that someone wearing a gold Rolex has paid a lot of money to look cheap. You would be shocked at the amount of pm watches Rolex sells in the middle east. If you made a toilet brush out of gold they would by it.

I doubt too many buys PM watches on full retail ,if you get it on the right price the resale won t hurt that much.

Indian businessman famed for $240,000 gold shirt 'beaten to death'
This guy loved his gold, and it cost him his life. I'm sure most of you have heard about this already. Strange, I don't see a watch on him.

Don't under sell yourself by saying "low value stuff". You have a great watch the Explorer, I have a SS Sub and Explorer2. They aren't low value. I know what you meant but they are what I would call tasteful. The second paragraph of your post I agree with for sure. I'm not a YG fan at all but each to their own so no one here gets offended. The PM especially platinum I think shows Rolex are smart as they can rip folk off by getting them to buy PM when the SS watches are the same watch and are much better value albeit they are still relatively expensive, just not vulgarly expensive.

Daytona anniversary edition (116506) not a great seller?
I'm struggling to find nexus twixt a Pt. Daytona and the violent death of a businessman.
Back OT, I have not seen Platona's selling under $50K except Jomashop or Bob's - two places I'd never wire $50K. On the whole, the Platona plays well with people having the wherewithal to own one... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

No it's not a great seller. It's because of the price. Afraid most rolex buyers are not WIS and good luck talking them into paying over twice the cost of a day date for one. Heck good luck talking a wis into it while you're at it.
Then of course some will find the colors to be not neutral enough for them. I for one think it's gorgeous and must be tried on to be appreciated |

You know, the shirt is actually okay looking. What makes him look ridiculous is the rest of the accessories.

This is true, when I was in Dubai a few years ago, I saw a few baby's with solid gold pacifiers.
They do love there gold in that part of the world

Yeah I can imagine mate. I just don't suit gold it's down to Scottish skin colour compared to Arabic skin tone. I just wouldn't wear gold at all. The taste in Dubai is.....interesting to say the least and your post about baby's pacifiers describes it to a tee! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Daytona anniversary edition (116506) not a great seller?
Platona is popular, but too expensive for most. Everyone here with one has the version with the subdials outer border in brown. The one with the all blue borders seems to be less popular, perhaps less pricey at AD?

Maybe b/c the blue borders use diamonds and that seems to turn some away? Just a guess...

The watch has to be seen in person....the brown ceramic bezel really works for the watch as does the brown subdials...it's a very pleasing chocolate. The glazier blue is just sublime in person in different light. I was smitten the moment I put it on properly sized and I can't get the thing out of my head.....only watch I'm saving for now that I'm more or less done with the stainless collection. And I agree with everyone for sure....you don't see it as a popular piece due to the price obviously....not because it's less attractive than the stainless pieces.
