Gibson, all the way.

I currently own seven Les Pauls, but I have sold both of my Strats. I don't miss them at all. Now Teles, that's a diferent story....... But IMHO, Strats are popsicle sticks with inconsistent quality, poor switch placement and useless bridge pickups.

Erwin, always knew you were one of us good guys

But your right, my Les Paul is one heavy guitar, have to sit down most of the time to play it.

Eric, great looking black Strat, and the pink one isn't too bad either, cute and suits your daughter.

Nothing quite like a Gibson LP. Thirty-some years of partnership here.

Pat, that's a great photo with the GMT on your LP (Les Paul for those who don't know )

Being in the band in the 1970's is something that I think you can be very proud about, those were the days of pioneering Rock n' Roll

It's amazing how the poll is 50/50.....I wonder if that is in fact a true representation of the feelings around the world, my guess it is very close if not on the money

Love the Chet Atkins Country Gentlemen. Brings back memories of open tuning in D or putting a toothpick between the strings and nut to gain some room and play slide in standard tuning. Damn, I need to strap one on and play some today.

The hollow body tone is all there but the real benefit is the weight. At only 7 lbs it's much easier on my 49 year old back after 3 sets.

More than once I had to stick a dish rag into a hollow body to help control feedback. Now, that comment left the door wide open!

Guess that proves both are iconic brands that, when used in the right hands, have changed the sound of music.

I usually to sit in a chair and play without a strap so the weights not really a factor for me. My Gibson '57 Goldtop reissue has to be a full 2 pounds lighter than my other LPs. It's sustains "forever" too - with the long tenon and all. IMO, If you shop hard the price gap between a Custom Shop reissue and a Std. is not that great. If you get "GAS" for an R9 or R0 with a excellent top - then that's another story price wise. Brazilian rosewood will set you back even more (then you'll be talking old stock or used IIRC).

I wish you told me about the weight of the GoldTop a week ago, I could have got one of those custom shops for around $2,400.
I'd love to see a photo of your gold top 57 CS.

I'm not much of a player but my son is. We made a road trip together a few years back to Nashville to find him the PRS that was part of his college graduation present. Did we have a blast. Guitar shops everywhere, and a lot of really good players working in them. Had to order the guitar he wanted (I would have to ask him which model it is) so we were a little disappointed going home empty handed. However, three weeks later when we picked it up I've never seen a kid so excited. He has told me that every time he plays it he remembers every detail of that trip. So, I would say PRS for me too, because the memories of that weekend mean so much to my son and me.

I'll get a pic and post it! $2400 USD new? Even if used and minty - Wow! The vintage market for LPs is tanking (with every thing else) and there's a lot of used CS pieces out there for a fair price from what I can tell -- so keep shopping!

As far as weight - AFAIK the lighter mahogany is generally saved for the reissue CS guitars (weight, tenon length, and tone are the subject of much debate on the LP forums).

I'm not so concerned about weight as tone. I've found LPs (studios, standards, CSs) that sound "better" not plugged in (this translates to louder usually) - are more full of tone plugged in. Strings and proper setup surely play a part in "better tone" and it's hard to compare one to another since mother nature is involved in most of the raw materials. I put better in quotes - because it's kind of like saying "prettier" or something.

Yeah, I know I read those threads too on LP forums. Anyway, do you have any views on the long tenon theory giving better tone/sustain?

What about the darn weight, my LP is solid, and weighs a lot, but the script says that equals better tone.

I have no idea, I'm asking here, cos I don't want to get my butt kicked on the LP forums

I was puzzled by the weight, tone, tenon equation for a while myself. Here's my take on it (all IMHO of course) from posts I've read on various forums: The lighter mahogany generally is considered a better tone wood. The older Gibsons used the lighter mahogany that was readily available when we had more back in the day. I guess most of the affordable, plentiful tone wood from Honduras (or?) has been harvested and the newer timber has more mineral content (because of the place it grows and the water it absorbs, weather patterns, etc.).

I'm told Gibson sets aside the lighter pieces it purchases for the Custom Shop guitars and uses the heavier pieces for "regular" Studios and Standards.

My R7 Goldtop weighs at least a full pound less than my 2 Standards which are mahogany but weight relieved (holes drilled in the '86 or actual chambers routed under the maple cap in the '07). I'm guessing the regular standard weigh about 8.5 pounds (according to the bathroom scale!).

As for sustain, a longer tenon provides more contact areas between the body and the neck - which in theory gives better sustain. I'm not sure how to describe the tone on my Goldtop - other than say it sounds more a bit more alive - and is louder unplugged than the others.

So I guess the bottom line is that if you go Custom Shop/Reissue with Gibson you're more likely to get a better sounding guitar while keeping the weight down. However you can surely spend a lot on a Custom Shop tone-dud and then play a Studio that sounds fantastic because of the differences in wood and the human element involved in manufacturing. No 2 are really alike and it's important to play a properly setup guitar before you buy - if at all possible.

FWIW, I've found myLespaul.com forum to be on par with the helpful and friendly folks here on TRF. They won't kick your butt! Some of the other forums can get nasty which is unfortunate!

Does it have to be either one of those? Is it the man or the guitar?
