The Sons New Car.

I've spent bloody weeks persuading my son not to waste his hard earned cash on the motoring equivalent of blow-dried peroxide blonds hairdresser car the Audi TT,even Clarkson thinks they are uncool.

They are ghey, they are all about Style over substance. They are not a 'proper' sports car. They are front wheel drive, they look dated. There is a new model coming out, that looks like a cross between an A3 and a Cortina Estate. They are slow, and god forbid Jody Marsh owns one...In short they are the very essence of Blond Essex girl chic.

Guess what The stupid bugger has just gone out and purchased a demo one.
What a idiot, when I asked what possessed him, his answer was his partners Mother liked it "That says it all really"

Can anyone explain the merits of buying one of these in preference to say a Porsche Boxster or a Honda S2000 which can be had for about the same money second hand and can provide the level of comfort/sportiness he desires?.A friend in the trade said they call the TT the 'Grenades' especially in the ever popular Silver colour. However, the 225 or 250bhp four wheel drives certainly go well, and handle safely, if in an uninspiring manner, and the interior is undoubtedly high fashion, even today. But the joke rear seats are just so sad, and there are more stylish better handling cars around for sure, such as the fuel-swilling Mazda RX8, rev happy Honda S2000, or Fat Nissan 350Z.All are better all rounders IMHO

Even baby Porsche is lovely in 987 guise, but the early 986 is ugly inside and despite the bloody huge price tag has engine problems, and older ones are not that fast. They also bounce at the front just like a Beetle, and the engine noise never ever goes away.

The TT is partly appealing, but too lacking in real finesse to be anything other than a mini-chest wig, or Poseurs poncemobile.I really did admire the TT when it first came out.. simply because it was different. I feel a similar tingle with the new Nissan Z. Trouble is, as mentioned above, all the hairdressers will have one now.I have nothing against Audi, but dislike TT's with a passion,to small for me,or my son IMO.Think I'd rather drive a smart car, than be seen in the automotive equivalent of a pink Fred Perry T-shirt.

I personally would have gone for the S2000. Amazing car. Great performance and simply fun to drive. I drove my friend's S2k for a while. It was sweet.
My other friend has a 2001 Boxter. Love it too. Much more sophisticated car then the S2k. However, the S2k was more sports car fun to drive. Plus the reliability is unbeatable.
The TT does look a wee bit dated now.

I actually like the TT (in the quattro guise). I think it's cool in that it can't be mistaken for any other car on the road (something you can't say about 99.9% of Japanese cars) and the fit/finish is second to none. I'm not a big fan of the drop top, but the coupe kicks ass!

BTW, on Gran Turismo2, a hopped up TT will blow every other car off the road.

Padi,

I hate reading between the lines when you post.
Why don't you just come out and say what you really mean?

Cheers,

Mrdi
