Newbie needs help!

So I have been looking around and have finally decided to pull the trigger on my first Rolex. I am looking at the Datejust ii black roman dial w/ fluted bez. I am scared to buy from ebay as i am not too knowledgeable about the watches and have read some horror stories. I have seen on here you can still save a lot compared to an AD. I was wondering if there had been any issues here with fakes or if I should be confident buying from a TRF member? Is there any way to see how reputable a seller is? Any insight is much appreciated as i want to make sure Im getting the real deal. Thanks.

As far as I know, there has never been a fake from any of the reputable sellers.

Go through the "Buyers/Sellers "Who's Who" ?!?!" section. You will see the same names popping up page after page with great feedback.

After you make a short list of those names, I suggest googling them and after that, you should contact a few with what you want.

Go with the one you feel most comfortable with.

Take your time and you will be fine.

Edit : One thing to note, since you've posted the exact model you want, be wary of anyone who contacts you directly via private message offering to sell you that model.

Thanks Syed, I've found 2 sellers that seem pretty legit and am leaning towards a man named Jared aka ponycar he seems to have good references. I love saving money but dont want my first purchase to be a horror story!

Although I have not dealt with them personally, davidsw and takuya are a couple of highly reputable dealers here on TRF with tons of references. You might want to drop them a PM.

Hey Deuce,
Wishing you much happiness and success in your pursuit.
As you mentioned, Jared aka "ponycar" seems to be a good choice for you. Without anyone's solicitations, he was what you discovered. He has been around a long long time, and as anyone can tell you, REPUTATION is everything. A friend once reminded me, you are only as good as your last transaction. You don't buy the watch, you buy the seller.
Feedback can be solicited so try and be objective.
Best of luck...
Welcome to your first Rolex

Ponycar is in my neck of the woods but I have never purchased from him. He is a trusted seller and have been on this forum for a while. His photos of his watches are not the best but I like that because the scratches and dings, if any, are not concealed by lighting or intent. He is not going to scam you, imo, but how happy you will be with the transaction will depend on your expectation for the watch. Unless you are buying a BNIB, just remember that you are buying a "used" watch.

Just to state the obvious, not every TRF seller is a trusted seller. The trusted sellers are the active dealers with many positive references in the who's who section.

Ponycar has great reputation on here. There are like 5 dealers on here with DJII available. Do you research ask a lot of question and you should be fine.
