black GMT master II or black sub

I'm graduating this year and I'm thinking about getting myself a decent watch. Never a big fan of batman. What's your choice between these two? Such a difficult choice. Thanks.

If you don't think you will use the gmt function you just have to decide if you like the polished links more or less. I pick the gmt every time because it track 2 timezones and also time a pizza like the sub. It just has more functionality.

Love both. My first Rolex was a Sub. My favorite Rolex though is the GMT. Every bit as iconic as the Sub, and has the coolest complication ever devised for a wristwatch, imho.

Thanks for the advice. Is GMT easy to set? The time zone function looks a little bit complicated to use compared to the quickset of sub.

It's not that complicated. The date does take a little longer to set because it is not quickset like the Sub. It is "quasi-quick set". With the crown in position two, on the Sub this turns the date wheel. On the GMT this turns the hour hand. So you spin the hour hand around the dial twice to change to the next day (Only takes 2-3 turns of the crown). It's still pretty fast. Of course, if it's your daily wearer you won't have to change the date except one day once every couple of months that less than 31 days, and then only one day. If the watch is stopped when you go to set it, you will never be more than two weeks away from the date because you can set it forwards or backwards.

To set the GMT:

1) Pull the crown out to position 3 and set the minute hand and 24 hour hand to the bezel.

2) With the crown in position 2, set the date and 12 hour hand to the dial.

Using the time zone function is simple. You read the 24 hour hand off the bezel, and the 12 hour hand off the dial. I keep both hour hands synched to my home time (but you don't have to). So if it's 2PM where I live in California, the 24 hour hand is pointing to 14 on the bezel. If I travel say to New York, I jump the 12 hour hand ahead 3 hours so my watch is now reading local time in NYC. I continue to track my home time with the 24 hour hand off the bezel. Now, say I need to call a friend in Hawaii. It's three hours behind my home time. So I move the bezel clockwise three hours and the 24 hour hand is now pointing to the time in Hawaii. If it was reading 14 for the time in LA (2PM) then it would now read 11AM, the time in Hawaii. When I want home time again fro any third time I was tracking, I just move the pip back to the top.

It's really not that complicated, and part of the charm of owning a GMT is knowing how it functions.

Some points for the OP to think about and look into before deciding:

GMT is a busier looking watch than Sub. ( bezel has more digits written all over it, the extra hand inside).

Unless you travel a lot, in think the GMT functionality is a bit over rated.

GMT will cost more to service and probably more prone to having issues ( added functionality does add complexity).

You can't go wrong with either one, and I own one of each now. Just some points for you to think about.

If you buy a Sub, you will be able to dive to great depths. You will be able to don a tight fitting rubber suit and look like James Bond with your Sub on your wrist. The only problem is that you won't know the time in other countries.

If on the other hand you buy a GMT, you will know the time in NY or London etc but will be limited to diving to a mere 100ft. It is only fair to mention that most Rolex only get wet in the shower or when the wearer is doing the washing up.

So what is the most important, chasing fish in the water or telling your friends the precise time in other countries. Hope that helps.
