yacht master 1
this watch is so under rated.
anyone know why it's never as popular as the sub, gmt master or daytona? |

It is unpopular for a reason- it has got nothing going for it compared to other models.
If you like it, buy it as you should be able to negotiate a really good deal. It could well be sought after twenty years from now, such is the fickle demand patterns of Rolex. Regards Mick |

The price point is quite a bit higher than a Submarner or GMT. It is my opinion that element is responsible for deterring potential buyers.

I think it's a great time piece!! More comfortable than most with the curved lugs and a splash of color against all the black dials I have. Hands down one of my favorites!
Maybe the higher price and the original platinum dial was too monotone lowered demand, but the blue dial and new rhodium dial I have to say are amazing.

Maybe its the name for me and the plat bezel, it doesn't feel as utilitarian. and I don't have a yacht. nor am I a master of a yacht.

I love mine, I think it has the best of both worlds, it works as a sports watch but its also elegant and classy.
I think its a good thing that its such an underrated watch, every yachtmaster feels special. |

^this is true for new purchase Yet the price of a 2nd hand Yacht-Master is much more competitive with Submariner Date & GMT. The 16622 is one of my favorites!

yacht master 1
It's a silly watch in many respects...
It's blingy, but has the body of a Sub/diver. No yachtsman uses one... Thats just my opinion...but if you like the shiny all over look, pick one up! |

These are pretty watches.
But, they are quite shiny! The bezel seems a bit big, at least to me. |

They are awesome and exude the class you get from seeing a fine piece of jewelry (the plat. helps with that). They have the same case as a daytona and fit nicely on the wrist. To me, watches like the BLNR photograph very well and may even look better in a photo than in person. The YM is definitely the opposite and doesn't photograph well, but is beautiful in person and on the wrist.
In 2006, I wanted a Daytona, but they were too hard to get. I wasn't interested in the gmt because I didn't care much for the bezel and font used. I'd already had a sub. and sold it because I became bored with it. While the sub is a staple and legendary, it is also the first choice for most when buying a Rolex sports watch. Ergo, you see them everywhere. I walked into my AD recently and walked toward the Rolex case (I wasn't wearing a watch at all that day). A new lady was working there that I didn't know and before I reached the case she had the sub. in her hand to present to me along with a big smile on her face. I instead requested to hold the BLNR. Stereotypical I guess, but that's why I like something a little less seen, like a YM. When wearing a sub., most novices will know it's a Rolex by sight. With the YM, I've noticed people actually have to look at the dial to see what brand it is. Just my $0.02. |

I had one and really liked it.
I am right in saying it was initially produced as a replacement for the Sub. But at the last minute they decided it was too radical a change, so kept the Sub? Or have I dreamt that. |

Beautiful watch but clearly priced higher than alternative options in Rolex SS Sports line up. Love the new rhodium dial especially!

Beautiful pic! To me, it's the most interesting and unique Rolex sport watch. IMO, too many guys on watch forums only worship at the altar of the dark bezeled Subs and GMTs. Daytonas, too, for the busy dials.
The Yachtmaster has more class, elegance and still retains a sporty vibe. I think Yachtmasters are excellent looking. |

I think the price difference mentioned here is primarily the reason. When they first released this model in the early 90's it was incredibly popular and not easy to get. I still think it's fantastic, the case looks awesome with the rounded edges. I just wish the bezel was more durable..... doubt the ceramic will be seen on the non rose gold versions anytime soon if ever.

She gets more compliments on her YM than I've had even on my white SS Daytona when I had it. She can find nothing she would exchange it for. The platinum bezel and dial sparkle away, a truly beautiful watch. |

Watch for watch it's a pretty watch, just that it is over shadow by the Subs, Daytonas and GMTs. Resale prices are less than these others, buy only if you really love one and not plan on flipping.
YM didn't catch on to me until the recent blue, rhodium and chocolate dials. As gorgeous as it is in photos, the dark rhodium looks bland on me, which was a surprise. IMO the beautiful blue dial red seconds YM, looks too similar to the TOG 116264, costly only half but with added red calendar and super Jubliee, making the TOG a better alternative.

Yeah....it's greatly underappreciated and I find that just fine. Love the blue dial with the platinum bezel (even more than the newer rhodium grey side by side) so went that direction. I think it differentiates itself from the regular masses that think a modern Rolex should have a black shiny dial and the color really pops on the YM in person....also as with all Rolex sunburst dials, it's striking and different in so many lighting situations:

It's a stunning watch for sure and I was very close to buying one.
I kept away for a couple of reasons - The platinum bezel is easy to scratch and sadly, I'm always bumping into things. If I can't deal with polished center links, there is no way I could ever deal with polished lugs. These things depreciate as much as a DateJust and while I normally buy to keep, I've had to offload everything before and the idea of having quick cash is quite comforting to me.

Sounds stupid, but being a submariner or an explorer sounds manly, being the master of a yacht sounds like something that Thurston Howell III would do in a blazer and a captain's hat. (Actually mastering a racing Yacht like an America's Cup racer requires great skill and is very dangerous, but it's the image). But I'll bet that's part of it. Incidentally, I know that the YM II has yacht race related features, does the YM 1 actually have any features that would make it more useful to an actual yacht person, other than being waterproof?

It has a lot going for it, esp the lovely blue dial with red accents and the extra luxuriousness of platinum, but the bezel and numbers are oversized for me, if that was more proportioned like the Sub I would own one.

The YM is a nice watch IMHO but I'm not surprised that 'the herd' followers don't like it, it's ok to be different. |

The fact that they still look the same after 20 odd years is the thing for me - I've wanted one since I was about 8. One of the few modern Rolex offerings with updates I can agree with. I like how they're not everyone's cup of tea and negative comments about its pointlessness, lower depth rating and bling make me chuckle. Here's a pic for the chap who said they're boring.

Well...divers use Subs. Yachtsmen use...uh, Subs. It looks fine. I just wouldn't have a use for a glittery Sub. I'd rather have a Sub and a proper dress watch. I wouldn't consider myself a herd follower... But as an independent minded "different" person, do you have a Yachtmaster or plan on buying one? |
