Defending the Rolex Brand & the Men Who Wear It

Over the weekend, I had the misfortune of having to accompany my wife to her company's annual Christmas party. It was held at the local Hyatt and there was an expansive buffet along with an open bar. After about an hour or so, I began to grow weary of the shallow small talk so I stepped outside to take a 'Willie Nelson' break. Upon my return to the festivities and now feeling somewhat lightened (as well as enlightened), I somehow got dragged into a conversation that was taking place amongst four single women who were discussing single men and their sometimes ostentatious displays of success. The topic eventually turned to Rolexes and the men who wear them. Opinions were mixed (though often tending towards the negative). Apparently there are women who are impressed by these watches along with those who are contemptuous of the wearer. Comments such as a visual success symbol coincided with various derogatory remarks pertaining to arrogance and egocentrism. How I somehow got sucked into this conversation still elludes me but as I recall, I pulled up my sleeve, showed them my SS Submariner (on a humble NATO strap) and simply responded that it was just a watch. I also shared the observation that if some women paid closer attention to their weight, overall appearance and personality, it wouldn't matter what watch brand a man was wearing (whether a Timex or Rolex) as he would probably find some of them attractive and maybe even worth pursuing. The result: I almost got a Cosmopolitan tossed at me (but quick reflexes on my part averted the potential dry-cleaning expenditure). Turns out that my wife reports to one of these women (a mid-level VP). Fortunately we do not co-share a married surname so the coast is most likely clear. Judging by the amount of alcohol that was being consumed at the party, forgetfullness will probably be a pervasive factor. In retrospect, it's probably best to avoid angry, jaded, middle-aged career women/divorcees (Rolex or no Rolex).

hahaha never wise to engage multiple women by yourself on any accord! Especially when discussion leads to weight hahah I could only imagine :)

I am married myself and when my wife's friends or even my male friends wifes/ girl friends ask to see my rolex they kinda look at me in disbelief or in disgust. I have had soooo many people say to me "I would never spend that kinda money on a watch". I always tell them, "It's a good thing they don't have to."

Anyways it constantly amazes me how many people hate on Rolex owners. It is one of those brands that many people wish they could own but at the same time they loath others that own them.

Or better to avoid getting high and mouthing off to a bunch of people at a spouse's work event. Seems like your "defense" of Rolex by talking about fat, boorish women wasn't such a hit at the party. Imagine that...

When obnoxious people ask me why I wear a Rolex I simply tell them I do it for the same reason a dog licks his b---s, which is because he can.

I tend to give a polite version to the nice people.

@bobernet: Fat, boorish, women could do with the occasional exposure to some home truths. It might make the world a better place.

Having said that..

@OP:
Whilst I believe it is beta and cuckish (now there's a word) to let women (who are not known for being un-attracted to their very own shiny status display accoutrements) have the last word on males wearing watches, there is a time and a place to let slip the dogs of war. This was not the time and the place -- especially the bit about your wife reporting to one of these harpies :)

I maintain that the way to go about this watch collecting hobby when lesser types bitch and moan is "Never apologise. Never Explain.". We know what we like and we have the confidence to do our own thing. That's all we need.

If i'm out at a party enjoying myself I am going to wear whatever fun and flashy watch I want. This is when I relax and let loose and express my personality both with attire and in general! At work I have decided to wear a timepiece that will not attract any unwanted attention but that is only because of my work situation. I find that my 116718 is a good filter for the right kind of women: it filters out the ones who have negative things to say about it and it also screens out the other types who are overly impressed by it.

I have exhibited uncommon restraint in not providing my standard nomenclatures for these two types alluded to above :).

The OP failed to consider that the original group whinge (not the verb I'd usually use) session was not very reality based. It was likely just a group-bonding/venting never-be-young-again wage slaves' insecurities transference/projection thing. Coming back at them with anything fact-based totally missed the point.

Funny story - thanks for sharing. It's really amazing that people will make assumptions about others based on what they wear/how they appear versus what they say....really love the superficial nature of people as it's quite amusing....especially after a Wille break!
