I don't think women dislike a man wearing a Rolex as such, as he might be a 'good catch' for them. It's more the uneasiness they might feel that a man they assume to have money would spend it on himself. Women generally feel entitled to a man's wealth so a man doing this sort of thing is breaking their rules! All depends how cyclical and insecure the woman is.

Upon my return to the festivities and now feeling somewhat lightened (as well as enlightened), I somehow got dragged into a conversation that was taking place amongst four single women who were discussing single men and their sometimes ostentatious displays of success. The topic eventually turned to Rolexes and the men who wear them. Opinions were mixed (though often tending towards the negative). Apparently there are women who are impressed by these watches along with those who are contemptuous of the wearer. Comments such as a visual success symbol coincided with various derogatory remarks pertaining to arrogance and egocentrism. How I somehow got sucked into this conversation still elludes me but as I recall, I pulled up my sleeve, showed them my SS Submariner (on a humble NATO strap) and simply responded that it was just a watch. I also shared the observation that if some women paid closer attention to their weight, overall appearance and personality, it wouldn't matter what watch brand a man was wearing (whether a Timex or Rolex) as he would probably find some of them attractive and maybe even worth pursuing. The result: I almost got a Cosmopolitan tossed at me (but quick reflexes on my part averted the potential dry-cleaning expenditure). Turns out that my wife reports to one of these women (a mid-level VP). Fortunately we do not co-share a married surname so the coast is most likely clear. Judging by the amount of alcohol that was being consumed at the party, forgetfullness will probably be a pervasive factor. In retrospect, it's probably best to avoid angry, jaded, middle-aged career women/divorcees (Rolex or no Rolex).
Very articulate but may I suggest the occasional use of a paragraph? So you post about smoking pot at your wife's Christmas party then making some odd remarks about women (to women) and then post it on a public forum. I'm at a loss for words. Oh... here's one. Ignorant.

Coming from the guy that has TED as his Avatar...

RELAX... It was just a story and somewhat Rolex related.

Yep. You were on a roll. Smoking weed at a Company Christmas party. Then.... mouthing off to a bunch of female execs who work WITH your wife.

if you had any clarity of mind at all, you probably would be aware of two things, this is your Wife's night and not your backyard keg bash. So sampling some homegrown at the party probably by itself wasn't the best move.

2nd. If you hadn't had a smoke filled brain, you might be aware that there is no closer knit tribe in the world then Female Corp Executives. Think Sorority with more expensive clothing.
For you to assume that one of them will not connect the relationship dots with your wife is naive on a good day.

Not sure what it is lately on this forum. But way too many posters feel compelled to argue with total strangers about a trivial hobby that is only significant to people on this site.

The OP failed to consider that the original group whinge (not the verb I'd usually use) session was not very reality based. It was likely just a group-bonding/venting never-be-young-again wage slaves' insecurities transference/projection thing. Coming back at them with anything fact-based totally missed the point.
Yes, and it's not like men don't do exactly the same thing when they get together down the pub for a drunken vent. Never yet seen a heated debate there over who has the best wife/GF, always the opposite. Just all part of life and surviving, Rolex or Louboutins ain't really got much to do with it.

Glad to see that you noticed opinions were mixed. There are many women who love Rolex, who buy them for themselves and shop for them with and for the men they love.

What women have an issue with is the guy that shows off his Rolex as a way of impressing women, rather than impressing them with his kindness, thoughtfulness and intelligence.

You might want to save the pot smoking for your own Christmas party after making that kind of a remark. You deal with the repercussions, not passing them on to your wife.

So long story short you called a group of drunk women fat, ugly, losers, and it didn't end up well for you..

In my opinion women often don't forget these types of comments, and not only that but you just proved to them that Rolex owners can be assholes. I'd really hope that vp doesn't connect the dots between you and your wife.

The only worthwhile 'hit' were the ones taken outside. Incidentally and in response to 'mouthing off', I didn't spew thoughtlessly. I was asked for my opinion by one of these mean-spirited women and ''took the bait', just like our president-elect.

Chances are they did 'connect the dots'. Afterall, I was probably seen accompanying my wife to the party. As for 'sorority types', those of us who have attended college are more than well aware of the superficiality that often characterizes such associations. BTW, my wife cannot stand these particular women.

Best wishes to all for the holiday season and enjoy your Christmas parties.

I like your style and I am sure your wife does too or else you wouldn't be married to her.

So for all those judging what you do and don't do when and where

So someone said something bad about rolex, people who obviously are not into watches, and you started commenting on weight and appearance of women? Seriously? At a work function for your wife? Wow, unbelievable on so many levels.

I don't really care that you were smoking at the party provided you were smart about it.

What is unfortunate is your lack of people skills. These sort of events are an opportunity for your wife to bond with coworkers and hopefully higher ups. Your job is to smile be polite and make her look good. You failed miserably.

This. Unless you were verbally attacked on a personal level be a gentleman. If you don't agree with what they are saying my best advice is to walk away or say nothing. It was a work function not a night out at a bar with friends.

Seems to me once a woman's weight entered the conversation it was bound to end badly.

Defending the Rolex Brand & the Men Who Wear It

So I do many things because I want to or because it's for the good of my family. Obviously luxury watches aren't so much for the family, but when someone talks down on a what I drive, where I live, or what I do for my family, it's simply I do it because I want to and because I can. Call my kid spoiled and see what ensues. I'll do everything I can for my family.

Women's weight is always dangerous territory. That aside, I'm still not sure what their weight has to do with their concern over men's watches. Maybe it makes more sense if you're stoned.
