Rolex Submariner in 007 Live & Let Die

Just watched Live and Let Die last night with my 10 year old son who is a Rolex fan. We agreed that Bond's Submariner was the main star of the movie. The magnet and circular saw saved Bond's life in the final scene.

We fully agreed with Mr Big when he exclaimed, "That's a handsome watch you have there, Mr. Bond". The design of the Sub must have looked stunning at the time the film was released, and it still looks stunning today in a timeless way.

Coincidentally, we came across a poster of the upcoming Bond film Quantum of Solace today. The first thing my son pointed out was the Omega Seamaster conspicioiusly proferred on Daniel Craig's left wrist (his cuff was carefully tucked up to reveal the Seamaster).

Looks like the deal Omega made with Bond is for more than one movie.

Me too! My parents brought me to watch Live and Let Die when I was 10, which is my son's current age. Since that evening nearly 40 years ago, I've wanted a Submariner with a bezel saw and electromagnet.

I never forgot how 007 cut himself free in the climactic scene using the Sub's bezel saw.

What made an equally unforgettable impression on my juvenile mind was how bond used the Sub's electro magnet to undo zippers . . . . .

For me, the main highlights of Live and Let Die are the feats performed by 007's Submariner and the theme song by Paul McCartney.

Live and let die was the first movie I ever saw in a theatre (cinema). I think I was ten as well..

Yes I remembered the watch, and can picture the scene to this day, but I also remember thinking that if I was the bad guy i wouldn't have gone to such elaborate lengths to to kill my arch enemy...and then not watch him die. C'mon! What kind of phsycopath turns his back when someone is being lowered into a shark tank?

What really stuck out for me was the speedboat chase, the crocodiles and the McCartney tune.

I pretty much hated all of the Bond films which came after Man with the Golden Gun. But this latest Daniel Craig move was pretty good really.

Too bad about the Omega marketing....not that I mind Omega but, well you know.

If I am not mistaken the Omega Seamaster 2531.80.00 deal for bond movies started with the Peirce Brosnan flicks. He makes many referances to the Seamaster.


Here is what I found,

"Omega has been associated with James Bond movies since 1995. That year, Pierce Brosnan took over the role of James Bond and began wearing the Omega Seamaster Quartz Professional (model 2541.80.00) in the movie GoldenEye. In all later films, Brosnan has worn an Omega Seamaster Professional Chronometer (model 2531.80.00). The producers wanted to update the image of the fictional "super-spy" to a more distinctly sophisticated "Euro" look.[10]

Another possible reason for the change from the Rolex Submariner that Bond had previously worn was a change in the business environment surrounding modern high-profile films and product placement. Omega was eager to participate in high profile co-promotions/product placement opportunities, especially the James Bond franchise, to further its brand image/awareness. It accomplished this by supplying products and finance (something that the conservative Rolex company avoids, presumably because it sees no benefit for itself).[11]

Its Seamaster 300M Professional Chronometer is the current official James Bond watch, used by Pierce Brosnan in each of his Bond movies since, but not including, GoldenEye. In the GoldenEye film, the quartz Seamaster 300M Professional, model: 2541.80.00 was featured."
