Hole in the wall hmm , I drive past Hong Ha Viet bakery once every few weeks , I always make a point to stop, after waiting in the queue for 5 mins , I've got it!

King Taco is the "bomb", excellent food. Always visited the one in Pasadena, East LA and El Monte when I lived in Southern California years ago. Smaller burritos than what I am accustomed to, but I always could eat 2!!!

In LA, always loved "The Hat" (Pasadena, Glendora and others) for pastrami sandwiches. Pink's Hot Dogs was also good, as was Tommy's Burger (Rampart location).

A steak joint in Buffalo. Kennedys Cove. It's basically two trailers put together. They have a special blackening seasoning on the steaks. No reservations. No dress code. Always has some of the best steaks I've ever had.

If you add Philippe's for their French dip with spicy mustard, that would be a lot of my all times favs.

Pho 54 in Westminster is where I go for some good pho on a cool day.

This is kind of like the TRF version of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.
In regards to ethnic restaurants, you can often gauge the quality and authenticity of the food being served by briefly scanning the customers. If it is a Mexican restaurant and you see a lot of Mexican diners, chances are the food being served there is pretty good. The same goes for Chinese, Italian, East Indian, Middle-Eastern restaurants et al.

The only problem that arises is that in some instances, you have to venture into some of the shadier areas of town in order to partake in these dining experiences. Decades ago, I recall going to this little Mexican restaurant near Del Mar. I think it was called the Blue Bird. While walking from the parking lot to the restaurant, I saw these three guys off in the distance waving handguns and arguing about something. My date hustled me onwards and informed/educated me that it was probably a drug deal going down/badly. She was from north SD (Torrey Pines) and apparently far more aware of these instances when venturing out of one's area. Then again, the same scenario probably plays out in countless other barrios as well.

The Bait House in Clearwater Beach, FL. A hidden gem that usually only locals go to. If you're ever vacationing here give it a try over the more popular places like Frenchy's or Palm Pavilion, the food is great.

At lunch time in MPLS during warmer months, there are about 100 food trucks from various small restaurants that line up downtown. Many of the "hole in the wall" places get their brand and food out this way. Have had several set up "brick and mortar" locations due to popularity they created.

Midtown Global Market is another favorite. A food hall south of the city with many counters to get Mexican/Indian/Thai/Vietnamese/BBQ/Pastries, etc. Some of best offerings in the city are available in one location.

No kidding. Having previously ventured into the Mission District (SF), the outskirts of Redwood City, CA (as well as certain areas of San Jose, CA) in a never-ending quest for great Mexican food, my San Diego experience was somewhat tame in comparison. Perhaps it's a classier shade of 'shady'.

Stockyard Cafe in Bozeman, MT for breakfast. The rules are posted on their website which are pretty fun but they are dead serious about them.

A Muslim family converted an old 7-11 into a restaurant. Great sweet tea and lemonade, homemade cakes and pies.

The only place I know where I can get bean pie.
