Bats in my belfry! No, really!
The painter was out today and was washing my house when he scared out about 30 big bats from an attic vent. He went into the attic and said it smelled fine, but I was a bit worried because I read some stuff about bat poop and mold, etc. I read a way to put a screen over their entryway so the can leave but not come back.
Anyone have any experience with this? /I noticed there weren't many mosquitoes lately.

Do you mean an attic vent along the ridge or a wind vent. I have actually seen bats on the attic cross vents of my house but have never bothered them. Since I have a screen on the inside of the vent, they will not make it inside the attic.
If you are so concern, you can build bat houses nearby your property for them live in. Similar to bird houses but with slats. As you say, good for mosquitoes... |

In the wind vent. There is no screen--go figure. I think I am going to build a batbox from the instructions I found on the net. I apparently have a perfect location for it.

I love bats, they have always been one of my favourite animals. The only experience I've had with one was when I was at work a few months ago and one flew into my work. My friend and I kept him in a shoebox until we could have released him. I really wanted to keep him as a pet, but my mom would never allow it, and I have no space.
The funny thing is, once we released him, he actually flew right back into our work! It was crazy.  Sorry for going off on my own tangent. Good luck with your batty situation!

We've got bat in our cabin. Well not inside inside, but they live in the peak above the front deck.
Every evening you can hear them getting ready, they start to squeak a bit, then at dusk, the fly out & grab the bugs. Very cool to watch them dip & dive just feet from us grabbing the flying bugs that annoy us. Better than bug-bombs.

I love bats, too! I'm glad you're considering building them a home of their own. Do they stay in Mississippi year round?

True Story
We had a small bat flying around the cabin one night.
Everyone was chasing it around with their coat trying to catch it from one end of the room to the other. Then my 9 year old niece suggested we open the outside door. The little fella flew straight out the door in seconds.

When we first bought this house, we were getting them inside every so often. I spent all kinds of time with bags of steel wool to seal up every nook and cranny. Look out for plague if you have to touch one.

Bats in the uk are highly protected animals.
I had a client once who cleared an entire roost of em from a site. He was fined £1000 per dead bat discovered by the English Nature rep and The Metropolitan Police. His bill was way over £200000...killed the site's potential immediately. Build a batbox in a tree...they will soon leave. J |
