I do not get all the controversy surrounding Daytonas. They are typically held for the ADs best customers. So what is the problem. It is a business. Like it or not. Either become a good customer or develop a relationship to improve your chances. The list only seems to come into play if their are no VIPs that want the watch. My first rolex watch was a daytona and within 2 months I bought a black face and got my buddy one. I did not even know what a daytona was at the time. My AD told me I needed one so I bought it. There was a list 3 years deep. It turned out to be a very wise move and the AD has profited greatly as well as my wife with all the other items I have purchased which the watch would not even cover the taxes. Also it appears all the sales people are not equal. The watches typically go through the manager therefore he is the one who most likely makes the decisions and calling the shots.

THe mystique of the SS Daytona I think we can all agree stems from the rareity (at least implied rareity at that!!). If these things were widely available, my thoughts are they would be like the 16610 - available most of the time and rarely if at all discounted but attainable none the less. As for the AD behavior in this case, I'm not a lawyer but it seems the anti-trust laws are being pushed to the extreme. I am referring specifically to bundling of goods. My AD called me shortly after my purchase of my Datejust so no extreme long wait but at least I WANTED to purchase my DJ and the Daytona was a token of appreciation.

Let's say you get a GMTIIc, a Sub and a SS Daytona from the AD. You spend $6825, $5850 and $9750ish, respectively. You are in for $22,425. Let's say you sell the other 2 NIB for going TZ rates, so you lose $1500-2000.

From a Gray like AF, you get pounded even harder. You spend spend $12750 on the Daytona. You are $3k in the hole and don't even have a good warranty.

A reputable TZ or TRF seller can get you one for $10,000 to $11,500. If you are patient, get the cheaper one and have it serviced. You are well ahead of the AD or the Gray.

We all have our hobbies and I like Panerais and Rolex. I am not saying that I am buying watches I do not like or will not wear. I have passed on several but understand what it takes to get the ones I want. For example I recently bought a PAM 005 logo, PAM 90, PAM 308. I most likely will wear the 005, and 308 rarely the 90 i sold to a friend. What I really want is a 292, 317, 309, 26. Who knows we will see how it turns out.

I firmly believe that the Daytona should go to the first customer who walks in and asks for it after they take delivery.

No, I didn't know what you meant. Hence the question. No one's forcing the buyer to buy, just as no one's forcing the seller to sell.

My AD offered me a black Daytona if I bought another at retail, I didn't do it cause I didn't need two watches and I would have resold the other. I have no problem with an AD doing this, I've done a lot of business with this guy and he's sold me some key watches over the years including a Milguass when it was still rare and a heavilly discounted TT Daytona. He told me flat out that he has people on a waiting list for the black Daytona but his business is so slow that he has to use it as bait, he has no choice. Not a good business to be in right now if your not in LA or LV

Lets face it not all customers are created equal. If you were the AD and had a customer spend in excess of a hundred thousnd to million dollars a year who would you sell to? True you may miss a potential customer but considering there are not many watches that would be a small number. I would have no problem with an AD giving the Daytonas to the first person who asked for it but most likely that will not happen if a VIP wants the watch. Just my 2 cents.

Let me see if I understand. You get the privilege of buying to Rolex watches at regular retail, then he is going to give you the please of buying another at retail.

How about "I am about to drop 10 to 12 large on you, so I would like a discount for cash. I will then drop another 5-10 large on you for this here other watch, but You need to assit me with a discount.

Dropping close to 20 large on a AD is a considerable amount of money. What I see is a lack of "GRATITUDE" on the part of the AD.

My Ad alsways asks me what I want to pay for the watch I want. I write down a figure pass it across the table to him, he looks at it, maybe he accepts, rejects or counters. So far it has been one counter and a deal . A pleasant fellow, wants to sell watches and keep clients happy. Note I use the word CLIENT. A customer is someone who comes in only once. I client comes back in again and again to buy.

You haven't done much shopping for Daytonas have you? It would be taken back to the safe and gone about an hour later when the next person in line got the call to come get it. There's more of a reverse selling situation where you're trying to convince someone that you're good enough to be a buyer. Weird? Yes. Unfortunate? Probably.

My Daytona was offered because of my past purchases, and also the fact that they know I'm on the prowl for a canary diamond around the first of next year didn't hurt things. They know I'm a Rolex buff, and it was just a little way of saying "thanks, and we'll be here when you need us and we can get things done". Now, if I was really dying for one and I had to pay a premium to GM, and the warranty card came from my AD, don't you think that as a loyal customer I would be thoroughly pissed? Damn right I would, so that's where the weeding out comes from.

My AD is in a smaller mall store. Its the closest one to me. I've bought 1 new and 1 pre-owned Rolex from her, plus a pendant for the wife. She knows I am a multi Rolex buyer and would sell me a Daytona if she had the opportunity. She's the head salesperson, but not the store manager. She admitted that store has never seen a Daytona, nor a Green Milgauss, so they are pretty low on the priority list for that chain of stores. So I bought my SS Daytona from Felly Jr here on TRF. She volunteered to do any band adjustments I needed. Visited the store yesterday to have the band adjusted on my Daytona. I came home with a big bag of Mandarin Pears from her yard, plus a box in a bag with instructions to not open the box until I left the store. The box contained several logo'd (from a popular watch maker) marble pedestal bases with watch cuffs. I posted a pic in one of JJ's threads where he talked about being too pro Rolex. Seems this relationship aint all one way.

From my experience, AD's don't "hold" Daytona's for only the best customers. What they tend to do is if they have 5 "requests" from customers to have one, they will take care of their repeat or loyal customers first. It doesn't seem unfair to me as that happens in every industry...you have to take care of those paying your bills or buttering your bread so to speak. My AD also gives preference to those who are not looking to flip and prefer to sell to collectors or those that just love watches...which I think is a nice touch.

Of course.

Others can live in "La La Land" but I prefer to stay in the real world. Is it so hard to see it from the seller's viewpoint? I guess many of you haven't had the {dis}pleasure of interacting with the general public in a retail business. It sucks. The hardest bucks I ever made.

So you have a guy/gal that has bought a number of watches from you; a good customer that has helped you keep the lights on and make payroll for years. You get in a Daytona that you can sell at full retail and have them jump for joy -- and probably buy more watches. You're actually going to sell it to the first person (tourist you may never see again?) that walks through the door instead? What planet are you living on?

Of course, we b*tch about this every week, so why am I not surprised.
