In NYC for a position interview
I have always admired NYC, but as a visitor. Have an offer (a VERY lucrative one) from an organization on Sixth avenue. Quite a transition from the beaches of San Diego to Manhattan... Has anyone made that transition? What do you guys think?

Never worked on the westcoast though I did go to school there, and I did work in Manhattan for 6 months. The money has to be right. Living in Manhattan is a non stater for most, it's just too expensive. As are the surrounding burrows. Where do you think you'd live? NJ, that commute is life-altering soul-sucking. Would have to be really really lucrative for that move. Can't put a price on peace of mind and quality of life. JMHO

No thanks, I would not give up the SD lifestyle. I commuted from the midwest to NYC for 2 years, love it for working not for lifestyle.

Not for me. I know San Diego is expensive but Manhattan is out of control. Would you have to live and/or commute there or could you work remote just in the area? I am not a fan of NYC but that is just me.

Born and raised in North Jersey, went into the city very often. I interned in the city during college, but agree with Marc, the commute sucks. There are plenty of people that do it, but it wasn't for me.
I'm sure SD is plenty expensive so the costs are probably pretty similar. I doubt there have been many that have made that exact transition, SD to NYC. We recently moved and while looking for homes we encountered a realtor who told us the family was originally from California (can't remember where) and a company here in Philadelphia gave him an opportunity and $$ he couldn't refuse. They lasted one winter... and went back to the old job... Good luck

I lived in Manhattan for 10 years of my 50 years in NY. Although I enjoyed living in NYC, if would really have to be a lucrative offer to get me to leave Southern California for NY.
The weather alone would be a deal breaker for me. Good luck with the interview Paul.

No way would I pack up west coast life / lifestyle / weather (!!) for that of new york city. But I guess it also depends what mindset and position you are in life (family/no family, single/married, lots of disposable income, age, etc), and whether you can take advantage of all that NYC has to offer.
Been there on numerous occasions for 2-3 days and by then I was ready to get the F out. Good luck with the interview and hope all goes well!! |

Paul, you never mentioned possibly moving. Are you considering leave San Diego, CA?
Personally IMHO - I would not leave San Diego. Especially if you are going to be traveling for your job anyway and do not need to be in the corporate office. Offer to stay the first few months in corporate housing if they want you to integrate into their company/culture then work out of San Diego, Skype meetings, face-to-face once a month. Come up with some creative strategies to discuss if the moving issues comes up. Good Luck! PS- Anna will never move from here!

That would be a huge adjustment on many levels. Can you work from home / travel for the position even though your employer is in NYC ? If that were an option, it could be a nice way to advance your career without giving up the SoCal lifestyle. Good luck with your interview.

Paul, I do not know much about you other than your love for Anna and that your best friend is names Jocke. However, I do know about living in SoCal and it would take a great deal of money for me to leave that climate and face NYC winter. As many have mentioned, the cost of living, drive/commute times, etc will just be horrendous. I would do a few calculations with NYC living cost vs San Diego living cost and see how much a raise I would actually be getting.
For those of you that live in NYC, please note that I am not trashing your city. I love to visit for a few days at a time, but I could never live there.

Have only been to San Diego as a visitor. Hell no. Don't do it. Money is not everything.

Having spent just about my whole life in NYC, I'd say it would need to be a no brainer of a deal before I'd give up the SD lifestyle.

A comfortable apartment near midtown (e.g. a 1 BR in Flatiron with elevator, doorman, and simple amenities) will be $4000/month or higher.
You'd also need to be okay with 1) real winters and 2) less natural surroundings. But if the money's right, it's not a bad place to live and work. I still think it's more liveable than SF. If you plan on having kids in the near future, that could be a deal breaker (the public schools aren't great and the good private schools are extremely selective). |

Good luck Paul on the interview. You can easily commute from Hoboken which is a great city in NJ where lots of millennial live. You can live on the Jersey side, very close to Manhattan. Its not a big deal and will save you big time on expenses.
