Or rent just a room . . .

I don't wish to liquidate most of my savings, which wouldn't have been the case if SoCal wasn't that expensive.
Would I have stayed for good if all had worked out? I don't know, maybe not.

I was excited, and overlooked how complicated and expensive it was.

I have shared my progress throughout the years, this quest for an internship is part of it. Just like a few other things this just didn't work out.

That's just ethically wrong in my book.
It would be wrong if you lied about your purpose. Present a truthful argument that you are trying to apprentice at a premier shop in the US, but can't get a scholarship or other support to afford it. People will fund you or not. It's their choice to help a guy achieve his dreams.

Don't create an ethical dilemma where none exists.

Got no clue but getting a Visum at the moment seems to be really hard

At the US Embassy in Amsterdam a lot are declined

So it would be a gamble at the moment . . .

And as Abdullah mentioned - why not try to get the money together

If people want it for you . . . it will happen !

That is a €1450 gamble, which to me is a whole lot of money.

I understand . . . and more has to be paid before you arrive like an airline ticket, your deposit for the rent

You will need a car, insurance, etc . . .

It will be multiple times the price of just the Visum . . .

But the Belgians say 'Waar een wil is . . . is een weg' !

Bas, when you started this thread I thought you were ready to go?

Have you even started your visa application?

I got notified that the room can't be reserved without paying the first month now. This happened the day after me starting this thread.

I had by then already contacted the sponsor for my visa. But I had to cancel that last Wednesday when school told me the scholarship wasn't going to happen.

But why not find an hotel and stay there first and in the meantime find a place to rent

Than you start knowing the area somewhat

Here is already a tip : skip Compton !

Now I have no clue how hard you need the scholarship to 'survive' over here

And don't you need any paperwork from IRS ?

No clue if that will work based on a J-1 . . .

The first thing he has to do is to get the visa.

And that can take forever.

I started with a 3 year L1 then renewed for another 3 years before going for the green card.

All in all it came to almost 50k for me and my wife.

I really appreciate your brainstorming and support, I truly do. But you must understand that I made up my mind. I'm sure there is some way to get in CA one way or another but it's not easy.
And I can't wait and let places in Europe get taken by the other guys from my school or others. I've been disappointed a fair amount the past 6 months.

My wife's green card cost $1225 for the USCIS fee, plus $700 for mandatory medicals. I sprung $1500 for a lawyer to prepare the application (it's well worth it). The package was about an inch thick.

If the immigrant is in the US on a tourist or other visa, the green card takes 4 - 6 months. If the immigrant is outside the US, it's eight months to a year and you have to work two separate processes (USCIS and State Department).

Don't see how you can get a Green Card on a Tourist Visa ?

Besides getting married ?

I'm in the Netherlands.
I tried A. Lange & Söhne who after a few emails offered me 6-8 weeks, which unfortunately does not meet school's internship requirements.
Glashütte original denied my request and Wempe only takes German students this year, and the rest of their places doesn't have enough watchmakers/place for taking interns.
I didn't try Nomos because of a bad experience with a previous student of ours, school told me it wasn't the best place for an internship.

Bas, is Vanessa working for an RSC or the likes?

I mean if so, there must be many places to choose from in Europe. I can imagine getting in at an actual manufacture like AL&S to be hard.

It may not be worth going trough all the trouble and money to go and do your thing in SoCal. Seems like you are not set on moving there from reading this thread.

If you really wanted to immigrate then I see the point, but for a half year stay it may not be worth it?

She is working for an independent repair shop, but I'm sure the work there is RSC equivalent or better.

There are indeed many places to choose from, that is why I'm contacting a bunch of them.

The idea behind going abroad was to put myself out of my comfort zone. Permanently immigrating was/is not something I'm thinking of. But I don't rule it out.

Yes but the high cost is once again the issue.

Over here you can get a great room in even the capital for well under €800,- a month, this is the same in pretty much all EU countries.
