No really, it has the 3186 movement.

Cliff Notes:

Salespeople at South Coast Plaza Rolex store didn't know the 3186 made it into some late GMTII's. Went to a watch repair shop downstairs from Rolex and verified that my watch has the 3186 movement. Rolex salespeople learned something new.

October is Watch Fest at Tourneau. They have 24 month financing and double reward points for your AMEX card.

Full Version:

Went to South Coast Plaza last night looking for some jeans and of course had to stop by the Rolex store. This was my second visit and again they didn't have a single Milgauss in stock. So instead I tried on the GMTIIc just to see how it felt and looked on my wrist. Not bad by the way.

Anyhow, I was wearing my M Series Pepsi and the young lady helping me started talking about how the GMTIIc had a newer movement, blah blah blah, and I said actually my watch has the same movement. She said that was the first she had heard of that and wanted to ask a more senior person if that was true. Of course he hadn't heard of this either and insisted that I go to the watch repair place and have it looked at, partly because he wanted to be sure I didn't throw my money away for a copy. I think the real reason was that he wanted to prove me wrong.

So I went downstairs and the guy at the watch repair shop did the pressure test and popped the case back for me all at no charge. He of course knew about the 3186 finding it's way in to the 16710. Sure enough, my watch has the 3186 movement. I tried to take a picture with my iPhone, but it backfocused, so no picture.

Went back upstairs to Rolex and told him my watch did in fact have 3186. He was pretty surprised, but said it could be pretty valueable many years from now. We all know how that goes.

Of course it's no surprise that one of us might know a little more about a specific model than a salesperson, but I'm bored at work, so I thought I'd share my little story and kill a little time.

Before going home I stopped by Tourneau and tried on a couple Panerai, the 104 and 111. Very tempting. I wasn't sure how they would look on my small wrist, but there could be one in my future. For the month of October (Watch Fest) Tourneau is offering 24 month financing or double rewards points for your AMEX card.

Lastly, it was a ghost town in there last night. Granted it was Wednesday night, the Angels were playing and the economy sucks, but it was really empty.

Peter, the same was true at the Fassion Valley Mall Tourneau down here in San Diego, I was a celebrity walking around in my daytona and the only people that were there were the kind that exclaimed: "People spend HOW MUCH!? For a WATCH!? I got my Timex-Casio-Seiko etc. for $29.95" You know, the kind of people you want to do this to:

Glad to hear you got it opened up

Most AD's are clueless on the 3186...they'll just say "We had plenty of GMT's sitting around for the longest time and in the blink of an eye they were all gone...we have no idea why!"

Thanks for the comments guys. I do have to say that both of the salespeople were very respectful and not condescending at all. The young lady even admitted that she could be wrong. Quite the opposite of my experience at a much smaller AD.
