quick rolex question

what does it mean to have a random serial number? How can that even happen?

Someone else will surely have more details and time specific facts about this, but up until about 2006-2008 (i'm guessing) Rolex used serial numbers beginning with specific letters. I.E. A354*** - Z653***. I believe the M serials were the last of this system.

After that, they started using mixed numbers and letters randomly, hence the name "Random Serial Number".

First letters indicated approximate age/year of production of watches. They ran out of letters and it's just a bunch of random letters/numbers that mean nothing to the end-user. Random serial essentially means unknown year of production, though newer than like 2009.
